Wow this is fascinating stuff here. Man I had no idea about all this DOOM stuff. Was DOOM an acronym for anything?

Has anyone done a writeup/article on the history of DOOM?

It is indeed fascinating! What was the basis of the i4 3.2? I assume it started as a 3.0L block? Was it dry sleeved out to 3.2 and what head was on it? Kinda ironic that you'd turn up on a thread that was initially about Dave going for 1000hp. I guess you may be just a bit curious to see how he goes?
Thanks Dez.

John Carmack owner of id software contributed a large portion of the funding for both DOOM and DOOM II these were the names of their most successful games of the time.
This was DOOM at its first Club Race the "DOOM" on the hood was just a decal but the next race we had the box art from the software airbrushed on the hood.

I'm just glad we are not fighting over japanese cars, lol..

Dez,

Thanks for sharing! Thats all good stuff.. Feel free to keep sharing the info!

While I was not aiming for the Doom cars, I'm attempting to hit the 1000rwhp mark.

Yeah engines were M44.43s and dry sleeves and fully girdled and welded deck.
I really did not intend on high jacking his thread just wanted to relate the issues we encountered at that power level. As a 951 owner I like to see that people are still trying to squeeze more and more power out of these engines

Dez, what was the cam arrangement if you can recall? It is great that there's still some life left in these cars and it's nice to see that you still own one as well. As you would have noticed there are some advancements being made on there cars, what would you do when modifying one to get some decent power and still make it reliable for the street?

I believe Comp Cams did the custom grind as for the profile I don't think I ever knew the specs. James Patterson was Bob's engine builder at that time and is the current owner of Norwood Performance he would have the specs as he keeps a log on every engine he has ever built.
Over the four years I worked at Norwoods the single biggest factor in making a high horse power yet street able car is having a very high resolution EFI system. I saw the progression myself with a customers Ferrari 512 BBi twin turbo witch started out with an AirResearch system that used tuning pots for adjustment and on to Haltech E6 batch firing two injectors at a time and finally Motec M48 witch is fully sequential and has I think about eight times the resolution as the E6. The biggest improvement in that car was off idle response and general low speed drivability and a much more consistent A/F across an rpm range. This is especially critical in a high compression (10:1) engine running high boost (15-24psi) at high RPMs (7-10k) at these extremes it only takes a few milliseconds of bad A/F to start melting parts. So the more adjusting points you have over a given duration the better off you are. This car made 27whp more just going from the E6 to the M48.
It would always amaze me that people would spend all kinds of money on hard parts and then when it came time for the fuel system they though some piggyback system in there and then wonder why they are not making the horsepower they should or are have tuning problems.
I will never understand why you would want the potencial almost guaranteed headaches when a Motec M4 is $1500

That makes good sense, and is generally recognised as true. I think that some people have an aversion to all the tuning that can be involved in a full ems like Motec. Also what about the lack of knock control? There seems to be very little margin for bad fuel etc if you tune it close to the edge don't you think?

Hey Dave, not sure if you let this thread go if you were going to start another one. But how are things on this "monster" endeavor of yours, I think we all would like to know.

Yes, I will start a new thread. I have been building lots of parts and ordering things for this build and at the same time, I have been building parts for other motors so, its been a slow build.

Very kool, Dave! If even you don't have a lot to show yet, please start a new thread soon to get it going. And "hopefully" it will stay pretty technical, and not take twists and turns like the other did. I look forward to hearing about it!
