The dyno owner where I did my 395 whp run this past Saturday runs a Honda Civic NOPI drag car. He says he currently holds the record for boost, 60 psi. He has 3 rows of injectors and runs fuel pressure of 140 psi to get enough fuel to it. Granted he does not care if he blows the motor, he says his problems when a motor goes is not from running that astronomical level of boost. And that at 60 psi he is not seeing the head lift at all. The last time his motor cratered it lost a wrist pin and the rod sliced the block in half. He said he heard a funny noise so he floored it. About that time the engine came from together.

St

You have to be a little more specific when you say high boost 20psi. Was that engine sleeved ? we don't know all the details of that engine. St nobody is making excuses for anything. For all those running 20-psi more power to them. Just ask Chris White about the comet gasket he blew at the Glen. At the track i have seen guys blowing HG gaskets quite a few times, and were not talking insane boost levels.

Facts the Hougo boss car that ran Le-mas in the seventy's was running only 15-psi with a dry sump system to boot fact!

You should run the test at the boost the particular engine/turbo was designed for. Running a system that was designed for 25 psi at 15 psi is just as meaningless as doing the opposite (running a 15 psi system at 25 psi)

When speced and built correctly the whole ‘thing’ is a system tuned for a specific operating condition. Testing outside of the design range may indicate something about the flexibility of the system but not much else.

In the end the fun is in driving these things, not about looking at graphs and numbers. I gotta go now….five days at the Glen in a row…..new engine (2.8 liter)….new turbo (Vitesse stage 2 – this thing spools FAST, I think I can get boost just running the starter motor…!).

Oh yeah – new Griffen radiator running Evans coolant – 375 degree boiling point at normal atmo pressure. Reduced Nucleate boiling….better heat transfer…more news next Monday when I get back.

I agree with Chris, it's a system of integrated components. All pieces must work together based ob requirement criteria...

OT: Chris, let me know how you like the Stage 2... When do you hit 1 bar boost..

Hey wait a minute. I've been gone for a couple of days. ST, Chris, MySwiss(with TonyG's old car), and others with Vitesse mods run higher boost because our motors are built that way. There has to be something said about tuning. Takes a lot of time and in my case, money, to get the cars to run that way. I run 21psi all day long. That's what the car was made to run at. I can and do run at 24psi when I'm up against someone who needs a spankin'. A lot of us who tune our cars, tune them to run at higher boost all day long. No glory runs needed. That's how we run...That's how we get down...fellas, can I get an Amen!!!!

If it is tuned right theoretically you can run LOTS of boost, i.e. 20-25psi all day long. The stories of blown headgaskets and motors almostalways have to do with knock; heat creates knock. You keep the temps down, and you get no knock

It's all in the tuning.

I haven't posted a dyno because I don't have a reputable dyno joint close bye, but i can tell you that I run 20 psi EVERYDAY! and on 93 octane, and a 26/6, chipped by God only knows who, and no cat, 3 in. exhaust. So the idea that tuning is really the whole point of this thread is well...the whole point. We can all take identical STOCK cars and have a list. It would be SOOO interesting...NOT!
What makes this what we do, is the pursuit of the edges of the envelope. If not we'd all tool around in Gremlins and Al Bundyesque Dusters.
Tuning IS the point.

I agree tuning is key, however if the parts you are using (turbo for us) is not up to the task (not designed properly), tuning or not you will get substandard results..
