Just a quick (pictureless) update:
After regapping the sensor bracket the car did not start.
Retried --> No start
Retried --> No start
FYI: retrying meant
- taking of the intake manifold
- removing the sensors
- loosening the bracket
- putting in the modified old sensor (with a 0.8 mm ring attached)
- fastening the bracket
- removing the old sensor
- inserting the sensors
- re-assamble the intake manifold
I did that several times with no luck!

Thank you. I did consider that route but I no longer have a car lift available anymore. Lying on my back beneath the car is not my cup of thee.

Please do not put an LS in that piece of beauty! Hang in there, you will get it working.

Good luck with the sensor issue. I remember mine... and the frustration of being held up by such little magnetic pickups...

To replace the heater valve I have to drain the coolant. Normally this results in a lot of coolant in places other than the drain bucket.
I will try to modify the funnel pictured below.
By cutting away the right top corner I hope I can position the funnel at the drain plug and catch all coolant without making a mess.
I will keep my fingers crossed!

This would be an excellent time to "upgrade" that drain system. It might seem silly to spend thirty dollars for this, but next time you drain the coolant, you'll forget the cost. Looking at your project, it doesn't seem like you mind spending money for a nice result.
I bought these two fittings (one is a cap). This extends the drain area enough to easily pour into a container placed below the rad or even slip on a hose.
Note that to seal, you have to fit an O-ring on the fitting that goes into the rad (be careful not to over-tighten)
And.. guaranteed this won't crack & break inside the rad

The idea for the slightly modified funnel was brilliant! In practice it wasn't that good. No room for the funnel to go.
I ended up draining the coolant throught the hole on the waterpump for the turbo cooling circuit.
Replaced the heater valve and put everything back together.
Only part remaining is the one were I turn the key and start the engine.
Will try it maybe tonight.

The engine did not start :-(
Today I had planned to check the wiring and connect a stock DME to see if the tach would bounce during cranking.
I've found the problem!
The wiring for the reference sensor is kaput. It was hanging by a (shielding) thread.
I will order a replacement from LR.
