Although I'm not yet finished the make it right on my 1988 S4 manual, despite 18 months having gone by. I have just acquired another 928 project at an insurance auction.
This time a 1989 S4 which has had a little engine fire, appears to have started on the front drivers side, I'll know more when I tear it down.
By little, it was truly small by the standard that 928s appear to have set. Wiring harness and even the hood appear to be OK, engine didn't get hot enough to discolor the valve covers, I'm optimistic that this might not be as bad as it looks.
To come in as a counter point to Jim: Good job, you cant go wrong (as a DIY project). Worst case you are looking at a used motor for ~$3k plus shipping. Paint and interior look nice and that is the big money. Of course if you took it to a dealer you might be looking at a $20K bill.
Auto,
Everything is pristine.
Looks to be less than 80k km 50k miles.
Has both belly pans.
Option list from Rob, thanks, is in VIN decoder thread.
My thoughts were motor at worst.
My son says I get to practice my top end refresh before doing it on the 88 next winter.
More Info had a chance to look more deeply, I'll post more pictures tomorrow
I have to make room before I bring it home.
The wife likes her new car,
Diamond blue metallic, very nice. front bumper has been resprayed, very well, 2 minor stone chips.
Fire was put out with a fire extinguisher, lots of residue.
The hood cover wasn't even burnt completely and no fire evidence on the hood paint.
Car was special to someone 18" HRE wheels, serious coin, and a pioneer premier head unit put in very professionally.
Not a bug or fin out of place on the condenser.
12 ways on the drivers heat on both seats, drivers bolster need a little dye, no cracks or holes.
Dash is good pod has one crack.
Rear glove compartment cover is off around one edge, otherwise interior is like new.
Came with 2 boxes of parts including TB covers, intake manifold and MAF, all look to be salvageable.
Malcolm
Our trips west have typically been in the winter for some elevation on the skis, that said if I can get one of these 928s sorted, the British have some good sayings, I plan on taking it to BC to show it off to my Dad. My son bought his 944 in Vancouver and my Dad got a big kick out of that.
It looks like an engine from a twin-brother of your car - a world of caution for intake refresh projects:
