Where did he have it serviced locally? There are only about 2 places in Washington that have known reputation for reliable 928 work and one is essentially retired now. And of course there is Colin just across the border in BC.

Hi Nate,
He had the recent work (incl the TB/WP) done for the past 8 years at Chris' German (formerly in Bellevue and now Redmond). Other service records back to 2002 under previous owner show Park Place Limited and the Porsche Dealership, both of Belleview. Do you know anything about Chris' German or the others? My only experience was that S4 I bought near you a couple of years ago that was serviced at Gerber, and I was not pleased with the work they did. I personally would make the drive to Colin and pick up a case of Canadian beer as an added bonus.

It would depend on who did it, right? I’ve come to the conclusion that major maintenance done with the knowledge of imminent sale is more often than not whatever is minimally required to make the claim. And that service, more often than not, is going to get re-done within a year or two. I do far more timing belt services on 1-2 year-old belts for new owners than I do 6-10 year-old belts.

Whenever I see a 928 on BaT with a bunch of service in preparation for sale, my first thought is: Well, all that’s gotta get redone. Only if detailed records / parts lists are included does my mind change. (Except in circumstances where I know who did the work.)

I'm in the middle of re-re-doing an intake refresh that was done two years ago just before sale: ‘cause stupid $hit done and obvious stuff not done.

I don’t know what’s ’fair.’ I do know that someone who pays $65k for a GTS may feel ‘suckered’ when they find out they need to put $10k-$30k into it to make it a reliable driver that isn’t in the shop every other week. And then, what’s a 100k+-mile $65k GTS with $10k of recent work worth? Apparently $65k or less from what I’ve seen.

On the other hand, how many folks will spend 50, 75, 90, 100k on a ‘classic’ car and then put miles on it?

The ‘market’ seems to be clueless about the difference between a reliable 928 and those than can only be driven to and from the shop (due to ultra-low mileage or unreliability) and what it costs to turn the latter into the former. The ultra-low mileage cars don’t really count as they’ll be driven a couple hundred miles per year at best, so they can leak, or misfire, or have dead motor mounts and no one cares.

The 928 I referred to above (intake re-re-do) is an example. There was a 10 year period where the VAST majority of its miles were going between shop and garage where the work was more-or-less changing one a/c o-ring per trip. (Some hyperbole, but not as much as you think...)

Frankly, none of it makes sense to me anymore except how much it costs to take an average 928 with no, or spotty history, and turn it into a 928 that you can jump in and take on a two week trip with no worries (and working A/C, etc. And, for a GTS, not adding 1/2 quart of oil with every tank of gas.)

Has anyone seen this 82 Weissach's edition? I've gotten videos of him driving it and then engine running. Runs well. Timing Belt, WP, and clutch were replaced 10 years ago, but don't have that many miles on it. Oil pan leaks, A/C leaks but works. Has some maintenance records, but he's done a lot of work himself. Interior is in good shape with just a little wear on the driver side.

See post #8151 (late April/early May). At least one person expressed interest but was having difficulty reaching the seller. Maybe they have more information now.

I was able to correspond with the gentleman. I requested good pics of the dash and seats and received a video from FB that showed the car running and didn't provide the detail requested. I believe the odo showed 95K, but this has been broken and unrepaired for some time; the seller estimated 15-20K additional miles, which I thought was odd knowing that stated length of ownership. I saw this at $16K and dropped over time to now $10K; He is getting warmer though.

Crickets after my initial request. The video he provided showed the car running but lacked some critical detail and was conspicuously void of the dash and seat seats. My $0.02. BTW, I believe that he had me mixed up with you because he called me Mike!

LOL. Lacked details of the interior. As I remember the drivers seat was ratty.
