Not sure if this is on or off topic but, what is the verdict on ROI of doing work prior to sale? After hemming and hawing about selling my car I've forced my own hand by buying another car. Two glaring issues are the dash needing recover and front nose paint chips on a driver quality original car. This car has relatively unique options and could have high upside (petrol blue, no rub strips, no rear wiper, manual seats.) I feel that I would at least break even and make selling easier by doing the work (total quotes are about $3000 and a couple months of time.) Thoughts?
Delusional seller but possible 85 parts car in Pittsburgh on Facebook (which I cannot link to).
IDK Otto. I may be looking atthat car this weekend with a guy from OH who is interested. I've studied the pictures. If it starts and runs, that is not a bad deal.

Ed, you are right and I was wrong. If it does start and run, it isn't a bad starting point. It will require paint and an interior but it isn't like the old days where you weren't going to get more than 20K no matter how much you put into it. Prussian blue is a nice and pretty rare color.

Selling my 1979 Manual transmission old boy. Haggerty has it valued at $30,000 in good condition. The exterior is in excellent condition and maintenance is upto date done by a reputable nationally recognized mechanic. All necessary mechanical issues addressed like Greg Brown fuel lines, water pump/timing belt. Tune up, fluids. Completely dry underneath. Manual transmission shifts smoothly with no issue with 2nd gear syncro which is a rarity. New tires, brakes, and rear shocks. I own three 928's in my collection and just bought a GT over the winter and just don't have the time to do the restoration that the car needs to the interior to make in line with the exterior/mechanical. The front seats have the normal pillowing but are in good shape with wear on the inside bolster of drive side. Leather dash has a wrinkle in it because its leather and needs replaced and steering wheel rewrapped. I was going to replace the interior with a full pasha interior (the rear seats are fine could just recover the fronts) and you would have a mid $40's car. 1978, and 1979 cars are rocketing in value.
gerty has this car going up 50% in value over the past year and many believe the old boys are the ones to have because they are much lighter than 1980's and up. Please message me with any questions that you have. Its a very nice car that you don't need to do anything to but I am very picky so the interior in my opinion needs addressed. This could also be a car to drive and enjoy and will be appreciating on its own so could be a good investment to just buy and hold. I forgot to take pictures of the engine and can get those to you but the car is stored at our second home so it may take some time. These cars are very quick because of how light they are.

Finally heard back from the seller. Got a battery in it, tried to fire, no joy. He thinks it may be a fuel relay, which he ordered a new one. We will see. I'll keep everyone updated. I'd love to become part of the community.

This appears to be moving into the "technical discussion" thread domain; you might want to start a thread there for this purpose.
But I will offer a suggestion: If you can't hear the pump, with key on, put a meter on the pump to see if there is 12v at the pump (have a fire ext. handy), get or fab a jumper for the relay, (30 to 87) with a single pole switch, pic below, to supply power direct to the fuel pump.
1985 Porsche 928 · Coupe · Driven 62000 miles (100040 km).
1985 Series II 928, Manual transmission. Canadian delivered car.
Currently runs and running really well. Had sat for years but Mike and Joel from the Buckeye LandShark group got it running after new fuel lines and $3500 refresh. Goes through the gears correctly, etc, all there. Cracked windshield, dash and pod.
Car will need a full restoration but currently a great start.
Very unique spec:
* Paint to Sample (metallic), dark blue interior.
* 5-speed (one of 690 manuals for ‘85 in USA/Canada)
*No rub strips.
*One of only 14 cars in ‘85 from factory with the iconic phone dial wheels. Certainly one of the very last cars to ordered with phone dials as not available in ‘86…
I was going to restore this car as a backdated resto-mod (remove spoilers, custom plaid or Pasha interior - give it a vibe similar to a ‘Singer’).
As some of you know the series II US cars are some of the fastest 928’s made by Porsche. With an x-pipe and Porken chips even faster due to the lighter older body style.
Asking $9928 OBO
Likely the cheapest Running, clear title Series II 5 speed manual currently available…would be great for a rolling restoration…
can deliver to Carlisle Porsche swap meet if need be.
Good project car with a reasonable price!
But the odometer was broken, I think she has way more km .
No rubstrips, 5 speed should be an driving machine if ready.
Good for me, the car is on the other side of the pond!
