928s for Sale
#4861
Intermediate
78 green euro
Not sure if this 78 Euro with Pasha interior has been shared yet. Wonder why the seller doesn't provide the mileage or picture of speedo.
Nice looking car.

Our friends in the Pacific NW should pick up this ‘88 S4 ASAP.
very nice exterior (crack free dash and maybe pod and seats) with nice paint.
even better if 160,000 is actually km and not miles.
All for $5700 asking.

I don't know, Nate. That car had quite a few issues in my eyes. I am not sure you could have gotten more than what was bid...
I do understand some of your points in general about presentation. Clean and detailed, yes. When a lot of things are not working, it shows simple negligence on the part of the owner. But is it worth investing tons right before the sale? Important is to have proof of general responsible maintenance.
So some points I don't agree with. In fact, better to have a cheaper car without a "just done timing belt." The last 928 I bought (even though the timing belt had been done 2 years prior to my purchase), I drove all of 90 miles before doing the timing belt. That having been said, all things should work...
Just my personal view as a buyer...
Although honest in what the needs were, this is a lesson in how not to prepare and present a 928 for auction.
* First, get rid of the aftermarket audio and speakers.
* Second, install the correct wheels. If you don't have them, sell the ones on the car to pay for an original set. Even if you don't like the originals, who cares, the majority of bidder will so get over it.
* Detail the engine bay.
* Detail the car for that matter.
* If you can't do it yourself pay for a few glamour shots in a cool location.
* If you have new parts for the car, install them, don't offer them up in a box. For example the seller said he had an un-cracked pod.
* Not as simple, but invest a few grand to get the TB/WP done. At this point of 928 auction exposure in the last few years, not having an up-to-date TB/WP maintenance is almost a non-starter, especially on the interference models.
* Fix the A/C. Especially if you are selling a car in the summer.
* Make sure you have a correct air filter and it is installed right side up. You may not get praised for it but it will prevent you from being called out on it.
* Install a jump post/drip rail cover. You will get praised for it.]

How not to sell a GTS. Seller should have hired a pro photographer or at least took pics during the day. No engine bay or under carriage pics and I had to edit the interior pic below so you can actually see it. But...it is a 5spd GTS in Wimbledon Green with a one off special interior, and no rub strips. Me thinks Wilhoit had this GTS for sale not long ago. Nevertheless it's a beautiful car. T

Sounds legit, but the engine issue may still be there. I just asked him about the thrust bearing stuff.
Message from the seller:
"Here are a few details:
I've owned it since 2013. My father owned it before that. The car is originally from New Mexico.
Torque tube and timing belt were done 2009. The issues i know about are - one of the directions on the driver side seat adjustment is intermittent; driver side view mirror electric adjust left/right does not work; air conditioning does not work.
Car has been sitting for about a year and a half. I'm living in Nelson but the car is stored at my house in Victoria. I start it and drive around the block a few times whenever I'm back on the island."

Just to close this topic, I admit that I should have said something slightly more nuanced. Had somebody like Worf928 or Mr. Merlin done the timing belt on the car I purchased, I would not tear it down and re-do the work.
However, when you are dealing with a timing belt changed and the water pump price looks very cheap, and you have no clue, if the mechanics in question ever work on 928s, there's a good argument that a lot of things will need re-doing.
