Under the 928GTS on the rear bumper appears to be warped a bit?

Doing the proper due diligence to get a car of quality that you can live with is important.

Not everyone will agree with this approach, but buying a car under the assumption it will appreciate is setting yourself up for disappointment. The only appreciation that you should consider is whether you will appreciate the features and driving attributes a GTS offers an owner.

An educated guess on whether one car will appreciate over another is far from a sure thing. If value appreciation is your main goal, at least proceed with your eyes wide open

from the pics I would suggest there are better examples out there........my GTS is prestine original, similar miles, 5 speed and I paid less $$$$$

I do drive it though........Calgary to Witchita and back last summer; Calgary to Yellowstone and back this year.......so nice to drive Ive put zero miles on the S4 in 2 years

The missing wing, visible single big exhaust, blacked out and bowed reflector strip (not uncommon to be bowed - but it stands out even more when painted) would reduce interest from many who will want a pristine stock configured car.

Would like to see the engine - it would not be surprising to see some mods there...

Doesn't mean its not a nice car - but it will likely command less on resale unless you can put it back to stock (so ask if the parts are available to go with it).

Now my car is very far from stock - far further than you would ever guess by looking at it - and to me thats just fine - I care more about function than resale value since I never really expect to sell it...

And who knows - someone out there may actually appreciate and be willing to pay for all the changes I've made - but they are certainly few and far between...

IMHO the 993 would be the vehicle to stay with. Unless you can find a pristine 928 GTS. I don't believe the vehicle you posted is that vehicle.

Aircooled 911s have PROVEN they hold and increase value.....928s have PROVEN they have not as of this time ! Will they in the future? possibly.

Porsche had the capacity to build about 5,000 GTSs per year but did not for one reason....not enough people were willing to buy one ! too expensive maybe ? not a "real" Porsche ? so there was little demand.

Thanks all for you input. I have also been looking at an 88 S4. White with full burgundy leather and all receipts since day 1. Approx 64K mi also. No flaws that I can see and comes with CoA. Up to date service. Top price being asked, mid twenties, but you get what you pay for I guess.

I love my 993, but want something a bit more comfortable with some performance.

You should be able to get into a nice well maintained S4 for under 10k as a comfortable driver. Keep the 993 and add the 928. If you want a GTS, I think you can find a better one at the high 30s price point, but there are not so many so it may take some waiting.

ugly aftermarket exhaust, no wing, painted, tinted windows, funny looking tires. I would pass at that price level, unless it was really pristine! Looks nice though body wise. However, all those things fixed up, which are cosmetic things, might cost about $2K

then the 928 is what you want, regardless of later re-sale value. Jim Bailey is absolutely correct. 993s, as the last air-cooled Porsche 911 (and to some, the last "real" Porsche for that reason), will command collector prices as the years go on. The 928 will with select models, someday.

If you love the Porsche experience, and the build quality and performance, not to mention the looks, then the 928 is, in my view, the pinnacle car, the one to get.

If you want to actually drive it, I wouldn't expect this as an investment... it's a personal enjoyment car. I can tell just from the exterior it'll take a lot of money to get it back to original condition, which is what most people looking at GTS's look for. Absolute original everything parts ain't going to be cheap. Exhaust looks like it has aftermarket pieces. Plus all the stuff already mentioned. Wheels look like they've been chromed or polished. I doubt the clutch is even close to needing replacement. Probably has plenty of meat on it still, unless someone that doesn't know how to drive was driving it. The middle year 928 prices seem to be hovering around the same as they were when I bought my S4, at least for my area. The only ones that command any attention are the really early ones that are mint, with pascha interiors, and the late model garage queens.

I would guess a nice and maintained S4 at around 15K. As of 89 they have a digital dash, and as of 90 they have airbags. Some say the 89 is the best of breed and I can't disagree :-)
