Initially I was getting excited about the recent rise in values of good-condition 928s. Then I brought this up with a friend who owns: One if not "the" finest original condition 1928 Buick (so nice if he restored it the value goes down), a 1923 right-hand drive McGlaughlin Buick (built in Canada, shipped to England, now in Virginia), and a 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE - all of which win best in show or best in category for every show they are entered in -- He says the rising prices are more a sign of the improving economy, that in fact all classic car prices dropped and are now recovering. I'd be happy if the value increased at a modest rate to offset some of the maintenance or inflation.

Here is that XK120. Worth a look.

Captain Slow,

I'd actually say that the rising values are people putting their money into commodities that cannot be easily confiscated, like gold......

Lizard,
I certainly don't consider a 928 a good investment, but I think everyone would be happy to see even modestly rising values as a sign that the 928 is finally getting the respect and interest it deserves. If a couple sets of tires and a few TB/WP jobs were "paid for" by the rising value over time....cool! BTW, because I teach at a high school and community college, I'm noticing a rising interest in 928s among 18 to 25 year olds. They are perfectly fine with the water-cooled V8 in the front. Perhaps the recent retro designs for the Camaro and Mustang GTs are helping all older GTs get some love.

The age of the 928 appears to be playing a part also. Young people are fascinated with the 80s like my age group was with the 50s (Happy Days..the Fonz). I also own a nice Volvo 240 Wagon. I had parked it on the grass up close to the school to load up some personal teaching stuff for safe keeping over summer. The car attracted a small crowd when I returned with a cart-load. "Nice 240!"...."It's in great shape!"...."Will you sell it?" I jokingly said "Sure, make me an offer". Kid offered twice what I paid for it. I've since read that the 240 is becoming a cult-classic due to appearances in lots of movies and TV shows kids watch (like the original air cooled VWs). I sold my first 928 to a college-aged woman who's first words were "I love how it's so 1980s". Something is up.

Default My 993 Cab to be sold for the 928

All, this is my 993 Cab I will be selling for a 928. I wish I could keep it, but the cost of the 928 I am interested in is more than I considered. So keeping both is not an option.

Thanks all for your input.

Beautiful car with all kinds of goodies done, but my heart is now with the 928. Just love the look and overall car. BTW, new motor, Fabspeed xpipe, ECU upgrade, sound system, suspension and way more. Just in case you know someone interested. This is a rare color combo and totally sorted. Too much to mention. Mechanics available to speak to potential owners along with previous owner.

I've owned my '93 GTS since 1999 and now have over 161,000 mostly reliable miles on it. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in it and drive cross country. I owned a '95 993 C4 Cab for five years and put about 40,000 miles on it before giving it to my son as a graduation present. Loved the car, especially driving around NorCal with the top down. It's hard to believe the two cars were made by the same company. Completely different feel and driving experience. I will say my GTS rarely gets a second glance, but I always got complements on the 993. As much fun as I had in the 993, it always reminded me of a high powered Super Beetle. You have to drive both and make the choice. Other than the Porsche emblem, there's very little similarity between the two car's driving experience. Be careful buying any 928 "fixer upper". Chances are it will turn into a money pit.

Boomboom, tell me about the GTS you found? Love some shots. I have one of every model year GTS so just love to keep up with them. The 928 Registry (now handled by the 928 Owners Club) has full documentation (thanks to Chuck Z) of each GTS built for the US market!

Here are mine... '92-->'95

You could get a rough estimate of this by combing through the 928 Registry site... Mileage is listed for each GTS for which it was known...

Hi James,
Not pulled the trigger yet, but I have found an exceptional 1990 S4 that far surpasses my expectations. I was not even considering an auto until speaking with a number of members. I hope to come to an agreement this week and hopefully have a sale and buyer for my 993 Cab.

BTW, nice models. I mean both curvy legged and curvy bodied.

Does it make a difference if it is not a GTS?

Thanks,
Alan

I would not buy anything but a GTS if I was looking for a 928 to hold its value over time. Also modded cars will not hold value no matter how well done the mods. Future "investors" or "collectors" will want stock unmolested cars...PERIOD! They will want them LOW MILES and perfect original condition too!

Now if we are talking Daily Driver...that is an entirely different story. Mod to make it the way you like it (or buy one already done...cheaper that way, if you have the same taste as the person who modded it) and drive the stink out of it. I saw Dan and Tony posted in this thread and I know both those cars well and they are AMAZING cars! I personally LOVE them...BUT, they won't be the cars that collectors are looking for in the long run as they have been modded. Dan's S4 far less so than Tony's car and Dan's car could be taken back to stock (though I can't imagine doing that or wanting to do that!) but Tony did so much great work to his car it would be prohibitive to take it back to stock form.

Again, let me say, I love BOTH those cars and actually considered buying Dan's car myself and would still give my left one to have it in my collection, but he is not looking for body parts...he prefers to be paid in cash! LOL! I love Tony's car too...great color and great mods but not for me.

I love my GTS's, but I also love the other 8 928's in the collection also! They also offer a unique experience and while similar each have their own personality!
