If I were only 27 I wouldn't be remembering anything about the mid 80's or much about the early 90's either.

I could really do with forgetting some things about the 80's for sure... thank god there was no facebook...

Those are very good reasons for getting a 928. I'm not sure if I agree with making your neighbors jealous, I really don't care what mine think.

But having an car that is amazing to drive, rides great for it's performance, is great to look at and is something I can do most of the work on; all at a price I can afford is why I have mine.

But it's not a good investment from a financial standpoint. Few cars are, even fewer that can really be driven on anything more than a very rare basis.
IMO, buying an S4 for a reasonable price and then putting the rest of the money from your 993 into a real investment vehicle (financial vehicle, not motor vehicle) would make the most sense.

Get a car in good mechanical shape, one that needs very little in deferred or "catch up" maintenance. Get one that won't take a huge it in value if you put a bunch of miles on it. And then drive it.

They sit in the same categories as the Studebaker Avanti, another magnificently advanced design for its day and like the 928, timeless and the Sunbeam Tiger...

...I do agree, very low mile original 928's from any year will be worth more than cars with many miles, especially GTS 5 speeds, but those cars are anomalies and yet are worth fractions of their Italian peers of similar ages...
This is the meat of the argument. There are claims that the value of these cars is increasing. They may even be true.
But those values will probably never reach the stratospheric levels some expect to see.
They just aren't that popular, especially compared to the 911 family. What the general public thinks of when they hear "Porsche."
And without that popularity, the values will always be lower.

Which makes them a bargain, an exceptional value for those of us who appreciate them. There's no way I could have afforded a 911 of the quality and condition my 928 was in. It would have been 2 or 3 times what I paid.

And because the value isn't all that high, and adding miles won't hurt the value very much, I can and do drive it (well, not now because we have a bunch of snow on the ground). I put over 3K miles on last summer. I drove it on an almost daily basis. And had a ball doing so.
I had a very pleasant conversation with Roger when I first had it. Ordering a few parts, we ended up looking at my intro thread (he was asking about the 14 pin cover and I had an engine bay pic posted). He made a comment about "investing" in the car. I said that I expected zero financial "return on investment" in this car. He replied that the investment he meant wasn't financial, and the return is in the joy of driving and pride of ownership.

Wise words IMHO.

I think the GTS (in particular) looks WAY more sleek and modern than a 993! Any 993 and any 911 before it for that matter. I think they finally got the 911 right with the 997 model and now the 991 is a 928 with the engine at the wrong end and a little short on cylinder count and displacement! LOL! So there!

Gary is quite correct the oil consumption is all in how you drive the car! At the track you need to check the oil every half a day because you will burn it up fast! Normal daily driving 1 qt every 700-1000 miles. Very easy driving and you will likely go 2500 miles before needing a quart. I never drive mine lightly. I whip them!

No cheap fix for that problem btw...so just add oil when needed and use premium fuel!

Great cars! I think the sport suspension is about perfect for daily driving too. I think the standard suspension is a little soft. Get some 18" aftermarket wheels (like off a PanAm) and then put nearly the same size tires front and rear (say 245 and 255) and the car will be so beautifully balanced and fast you won't even miss the 911...except for top down driving from time to time...but open the windows and the sunroof (mail slot) and you will hardly even notice that!

Also the 928 is far to quiet. Get an X-pipe, high flow cats and a Rear Muffler Bypass (RMB) and uncork a few more HP and let the glorious engine note be your friend!

No problem with PCA members here in Central TX either. I was VP, Pres, Councours Chair, and DE instructor for years! A great many 928's have passed through the ranks of leadership in the Hill Country Region!

Looks like I have struck a deal and will be a proud owner soon. Ironing out details, car pickups, drop-offs etc. The 928S4 is a very well known one on the forum. I think all already know which car it is. I am not jinxing anything by not mentioning the particulars yet. Still need to make payment arrangements.

My 993 should be getting picked up soon and will go to another good home, this is not finalized yet. I am very excited that I have found what I think I may have wanted all along, but took a longer road to get there.

More to come in the very near future.

Was doing something in my garage with the overhead door open. A neighbor walked by with his little girl and made the comment, "So that's where that beautiful Porsche lives."

Congrats, I don't think you can purchase a better car. Hell, a new car with the numbers that this one has would put you out $200k. Well done and post pictures when you get it.

Excellent! I understand the "not wanting to jinx anything." I can be very rational and logical... Until it comes to "jinxing by talking about it too soon."

Keep us posted and get some pics up when you can.

"I have found what I think I may have wanted all along, but took a longer road to get there."

Are you sure?? You sound a little tentative

Can't remember the twists and turns of the 6 pages. Certainly a 928 sounds like a better match for you. Do you have a 928 mechanic? Not Porsche mechanic or dealer, but a 928. Otherwise you will be paying someone to learn about your car, perhaps not a problem for you, but usu something to consider, esp on the newer models; there are mechanics who don't want anything to do with this car; there are mech who are willing to try at your expense, and there are mech who are knowledgeable about the 928. If there is no deferred maint., I'm guessing you will be happy for 2 years. Money does not always buy happiness. YMMV.

Good luck. and welcome to the tank.

Hi all,
Thanks for welcoming me to the tank. Hoping to have the car shipped in Jan. The local PCA chapter here in Atlanta has a number of 928s. I also know a local shop where the lead mechanic owns his own 928 and drives it daily. I don't think it will be an issue with proper service in the future. I am also quite adept and can do quite a bit of maintenance myself, although I don't think this vehicle will need much of anything for years to come aside from the normal yearly service. Brakes, fluids, body etc.

As I grow older my taste is changing and a GT would suit my needs. If I ever decide to have another 911, it would have to be either a turbo or GT3 and I would still keep the 928. Pretty certain of this now after doing quite a bit of Due Diligence. Funny I have yet to drive a 928, but just know it will be right.

I changed from a 993 cab to my current 928 GTS for me it's not about the "value" of the money but I can say that with more than 100K plus miles behind the 928 wheel I still enjoy every drive - I predict you'll be more than all-right.

I can't believe Dan is letting the Zyclamrot Metallic go - thought he'd keep this and the Turquoise beauty to the grave!

Not to jinx the deal, but congrats to boomboom if that's the case.

Boomboom - got a first name and location?

Thanks Randy. Yes it's Alan and I am in Atlanta. Used to live in San Diego. We are looking to try and potentially buy a condo in the PB area, Crown Pointe. Our first apt. was on Dawes St. We had a couple of homes and sold them. Should have held on to them. We may be back for good in around 8 years.
