To buy a 928GTS or not
Hello 928ers,
I am really interested in purchasing a particular 928GTS. Price in high 30s and car appears to be in great shape (phone and pics). 64K total miles with recent service for all typical needed items.
I have posed the same on the 993 forum, "To buy a 928 and sell a 993 Cab".
Here is the issue. I have a 1996 993 Cab that I would need to sell afterwards, just can't afford both. Will the 928GTS do as well as my 993 has done in holding value? I enjoy the 993, but think it is time to get a more comfortable car.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Interesting question ... if you kept the GTS in pristine condition and didn't drive it, then probably yes, it would hold value well as a low-miles specimen - what you might call the "Willhoit effect". Commentary on the forum here is that 928 values are diverging with very nice, low miles cars increasing in value and all the others falling steadily. Thus, an 'average' S4 around $10k, and the car you're looking at a couple model years newer still in the 30s.
But for an equally good GTS and 993 going from 64K miles today to say 100k, then probably the 993 would hold value better.

Thanks Tom. Yes I would keep it as low miles with probably 2K per yr max. I am hesitant with the high 30s number. Sunroof not working (broken and who knows why), original clutch and probably close to replacement. Should probably do the flywheel at the same time with slave and hose.

What year GTS?
5-speeds do seem to command a higher market price. If the body and interior condition is really good, 30's is a great price. Hard to say, what the future holds for the GTS. The '95 5-speeds seem to be doing VERY well in the 70k-100k+.

928 values are based on three broad areas: exterior condition, interior condition and mechanical condition. For high 30s I'd want all three to be excellent.
There's a lot of age-related mechanical stuff you should expect to have to address even if working correctly today ... leaks, disintegrating hoses, etc. Even a car with "no mechanical issues" found in a PPI will cost you $5K to get up to date on all these kind of things.

It's a 1993, 5sp. Supposed much of the brittle items done recently. As mentioned the clutch is original and the sunroof not operational. Paint is original and in excellent cond. Interior looks very good, but probably needs cleaning and dressing.

Doesn't look like a Willhoit candidate, but a nice looking GTS none the less. The collector grade pricing premiums typically are tied to originality. This would be a good 'comfort' car that will, in my estimation, retain but not gain much in value if maintained and not abused. The down side is these cars love to gobble up miles... after all they are GT's. The upside is smiles per dollar ratio is hard to top!
