928 RS Concept Sketch
#286
Painted this am before work but got a few pin holes over one old mirror location on one door
and the blaster put a small ding in another door i did not notice until I painted it beautifully
so i have to correct and re shoot the doors which looked great. Oh well. There are always setbacks.
I wanted to post these pics taken in 1970 of real John Wyer 917Ks in Gulf Blue trim.
These days a lot od times i see the color on valuable 917s and RSRs which has been tweaked more blue a bit by their wealthy owners.
This ( 917K pics) is what Gulf Blue is supposed to look like and my paint manufacturer seems to have gotten it right.

Lot of work, painting and allowing parts to cure a few days, wet sanding with 1000 grt and repainting 2 final medium wet coats so i have a durable long lasting finish. With one application the paint seemed too thin for me.
Moved all finished parts out of guest bedrm. and into Motor-home which is a great out of the way area..

But let's see how it turns out.
Thanks Martin, you have always been there as a positive force on this project. Just went out to garage and wet sanded doors and driver's fender with 600 then 1000 to remove any imperfections for final 2 coats of urethane. I am hoping to get no runs as they cannot be sanded out with urethane because when a run occurs, the color bleeds dark blue.
This way while at work today things are drying. Will respray Friday am.
With base/clear it is simple to sand and buff out runs. In hind sight i have added a lot of time to this but at least i will have an early '80s correct finish.

Great day, came right home and into the garage and shot these.
They are finally ready. All panels and body will have 2 coats of DTM epoxy primer, 2-3 coats of color, cure and wet sand to 1000 and another 2 med. wet coats of color. There is no evidence of bodywork under finish now. Very thankful as i am busy at work and need this paint phase of the RS project over and done with asap.
The paint looks grey when first sprayed.
The rest should be done (w/luck) this weekend as the weather will be perfect.
Working on dash and pod tonight, experimenting w/ stretching thin Italian navy hides over them. Loctite spray adhesive seems to be the best, i tested all available brands. Even better than 3M.
Have a great night everyone.

Matt this might save you having to do rework to your pod and dash .
I would strongly recommend that you use the Weldwood brush adhesive,
its a bit more time consuming to apply, but you will only have to do it once.
I have tried more than a few sprayons as they are easier to apply ,
However they will soon come loose after a few cycles of sunshine.
OTOH the Weldwood I have never had any issues with it coming loose,
I have redone about full 12 interiors on a 928 and the last thing you want to see is the carpet falling off after a few weeks of it getting hot,
same goes for the door panels and console coverings.
When you stretch leather leave it more loose that stretched real tight,
as after it sees sun it will begin to shrink.
The shrinking can be reduced by covering the parts from constant sunlight,
Also using leather softener/protectant will help to keep the leather soft

I use that brand as well Stan and you're right it's good stuff.
I have some experience with it and was worried about the very thin hide looking lumpy because of the contact cement.
I took care to remove all foam and adhesive on the dash shell so it will look smooth.
I agree the contact cement is very strong but the loctite brand seems to be very good stuff.
If it comes off i'll just remove the dash and repair it.
EDIT:
Stan i think i will take your advice and use the WW contact cement on the folded over edges only, and the loctite spray everywhere else.

If you like the look, stay with it. Could remove the leather, glue down a thin layer of high density foam, then rewrap in your blue leather (one of my favorites). Or, you could leave the polka-dot look on the pod and tie it in with the exterior. Always loved polka dot race cars. T

Polka dots? my neighbors will think i'm nuts.
Kind of like the subtle drilled look pod covered in leather.
Most have never seen the pod structure, so they'll think i drilled it..
Raymond, I may lose the left-hand key modification,
Porsche most likely would not have done this to the 928 if an RS was offered.
I think it may be pointless wasted energy time that i could spend driving.
Cool as hell, but pointless.
So I think it may be nixed.

Finished Pod and Dash
Finished pod and accentuated the polka dots Tony
Dash turned out pretty nice, i actually like it better than my cracked dash.
The leather gives it a little bit of luxury and smells nice.
I will be running w/o a glove box door and replace the momentary switch with a toggle for glove box lighting.
Oh, and only one sun visor too.
