Hey there Jim.
Saw the good ol' thread up there and was surprised.
How's the hunt for that 1st gear valve ?

I have the unit wrapped and sitting on a palate waiting to go back to Greg. Unfortunately I've had some fiscal calamities by which I must prioritize my output. I can't afford right now to get it from the Northern tip of Maine to Anaheim. Within the next 2 - 4 weeks contracts should be done, and my mast will be righted.

Good to hear from you.
Craig

PS: I am just as curious to find out what was.

Digging this one up from the dead but I just read through this whole thread and I have to know what ended up causing the failure on the old transmission!?

Unfortunately I have had some calamities in my life in the last few years which among other things had left me extremely fiscally challenged. I am just getting back on my feet. The old unit is on a pallet in my garage in northern Maine. It is an astronomical fee to ship from there. I will shortly get the unit to where I am relocating to and it will be less expensive to ship. I have every intent of getting the unit back to Greg, and feel badly that I have not done so yet.

Take all the time you need Craig.

Sometimes life doesn't go as planned.

The important thing is to deal with it the best way you can.
Looks like what you did.

Nice to see you back my friend!

100% + 1.

Don't feel bad for a moment....a transmission core just isn't that big of a deal, in the overall picture of life!

When you can, if you can. That's good enough, for me.

Thanks Greg.
I have just cleared the rocks on the shore.
I am a man off word, and will get you what I owe you.
The core will be for the next guy in line. It is for the good of the tribe.

Seeing as this exact problem happened to me today... The fix was a new transmission? Ugh... I'm going to tart checking as many things as I can from the 20 pages, but I don't have a good feeling about this. Did you ever get the root cause figured out?

As seen above, I have not gotten the core back to Greg Brown so the root cause is not yet known. I have a suspicion about the cause - once the old trans was out I removed the fluid pan and noted gobs of orange silicon on the inside border of the pan. I had an issue one time where I had done the fluid service (dry gasket) but had a little portion of the gasket 'lipped' by the reservoir that I didn't see. My next drive was across the border into Canada and about 8 miles from my garage I noted ATF on the ground at a gas station I was stopped at. I drove down the road to a local guy to get it up on a lift and the gasket righted. I didn't watch him for he seemed knowledgeable. I suspect a gob of it eventually fouled the valve body.

My point is your trans may be salvageable. I suspect that mine COULD have been, but I thought a NEW transmission would be the right thing to do for my journey with the car. What Greg found in Germany was a priceless and irreplaceable find regarding these untouched new transmissions.

Wow, I gotta say I was surprised to see this thread again. Since I had posted this I have been through quite a bit, and also have (I think) evolved quite a bit in my knowledge of preserving this machine. Interesting in the feeling it evokes.

Say, whatever happened to the thread started by the guy doing an R&R on the governor?

Yes, I would've like to have heard where he went with that. For the symptom he had the transmission manuals say that would've been a fix. Perhaps not the only fix though. Exchanging that piece is a delicate maneuver.
