That vacuum module (its green in color) is like 30 bucks for a new one. But if failed will not cause the car to not go in gear, many break the vacuum line during an intake refresh without realizing it then they wonder why their car is shifting hard. Or the module could fail which seem to be the case with yours.

Some have said it would not cause my symptoms, and some have said it could. I'm still not out of the tall grass until I drop the pan and look for presence of 'things'. As I was planning to check the modulator and its line, now that I see the modulator has failed I will change it out no matter what else I find on this sojourn.

Craig.......sorry to hear the tranny has such issues.

If I were you Id seek further counsel as to cost of repair given the possibility of fragments throughout the assembly versus a complete new or refurbed gbox.

The rest of the car and budget of course will play large......good luck.

Hoping its something simple, like low fluid or some problem with the shift linkage cable or linkage mechanism. Maybe, like lots of 928 issues, multiple problems.

(I've had an otherwise operational transmission with a broken parking pawl, and it doesn't sound like the issue on your car --- unless somebody tried to drag it away while it was parked and broke everything inside including the pawl and the operating parts.)

Here are some pictures of the shift linkage and axle.
Maybe its somehow spinning inside.

(Looking for parking pawl pictures, its on the output shaft end of trans.)

Here's the parking pawl, broken one installed, new one in foreground.
Mine broke and destroyed the transmission case and it leaked.

Thanks for the thought.
If I find damaged component(s) when I drop the pan (spring, clips, other sundry items...) is it a mortal sign for the transmission or can (I would think) these items be replaced and re-seated ?

Hey Jim.
I let it alone for a few days until the trans pan gasket, filter, and replacement modulator came in. I didn't want to drop the pan and leave it open for days. According to tracking, should be here this afternoon. I will post back.
Thanks,
Craig

Thanks very much.
I'm removing the modulator now, and when the parts arrive I'll post back if I find 'loose change' in the pan.

Before I put the new vacuum unit in, I just wanted to clear with the more knowledgable regarding the absence of the spring.
Once I put the vacuum unit back, I will next drop the pan and see what's there.
Thanks,
Craig

Well Boys,
Dropped the pan and nothing in it. No springs, not metal bits.

Not sure the failure modes of the modulator but hopefully the failure was contained and not spread throughout........good news I believe.

What does the old modulator look like?
