GTS engines should have green vibration damper, correct? 928intl web page shows 928 102 120 24 to be green and two local cars both have greens in them. One which came in my car is clearly black. Could it be possible some early GTS had different color damper? Engine in it is 85N00505 meaning 5th manual GTS. PET lists '90 and '91 M42 and 47 engines using black-grey 928 102 120 23 while intl shows red one in picture for same part number. Does '90-91 normally have red, orange or black-grey? PDF PET isn't too helpful as it lists several different colors for some part numbers. '84 Euro S I know of has also green while PET doesn't say what it should be.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

My '83 Euro has a red or orange one...I think orange, which would be odd in comparison with the data. Whichever it is, it doesn't have a timing mark where I need one to set the correct advance.

Thanks all. Rob, mine looks same color but it doesn't have that large groove at the back like GTS version shouldn't. Also doesn't have any numbers either. So it's definitelly not from GT. Based on color only other option would be '78-79 but this has 45 degrees clearly marked while old ones should not have it. Can compare it to green from 300 VIN younger '92 ROW manual GTS in few weeks. If they look and weight same it has to be the color only.
Just remembered one deciding factor. Nose of the GTS crank is different some way compared to all other 928 crank but I can't remember for sure if it has affect on size of damper center hole. This could be easy indication that it's correct as it's definitelly factory part.

Old thread: New question..! ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I have a M28/50 engine and I cant find the original vibration damper... I have a couple of S4/GT versions. Would they work or could it damage my engine?
It says on Rosepassion that the GTS damper weighs 3,31 kgs. If the GT damper (also green) weighs the same would it be safe to put on my engine?
Please advice.

They're all the same IIRC. Just different colors for identification purposes. However they are all past it at this point and you should really be installing something with fresh rubber like an ATI superdamper.
The original Porsche ones float on the crank and absorb some of the harmonics, the ATI ones (at least the kit sold by GB) are tightly fit onto the crank and dampen much more effectively.
Choice is yours however.

I have a couple of balancers here.
GTS balancer, green, 3302 grams.
S4 balancer, orange, 2948 grams.
That's a difference of 11%.
An S4/GT crank is 25280 grams, and a GTS crank is 28436 grams, also a difference of 11%.
S4 balancer to crank weight ratio: 0.1166
GTS balancer to crank weight ratio: 0.1161
Co inky dink? I'd guess so. It can't be that simple....

I have the green damper from the original GTS motor in one of my spares bins. My 1990 S4 motor has the original orange damper. Last time I had the damper off for the timing belt job I prodded around with a steel pointed tool and the rubber felt surprisingly resilient. Of course no idea how good the integrity is but the motor does feel quite smooth with no obvious vibrations at any specific rpm points.
Did wonder whether the orange S4 item could be replaced by the Green GTS item that was less than 10 years old when taken from service. My presumption has been that they have different masses and Rob has confirmed that one.

Any chance you weighed any other dampers? I'm considering replacing the damper on my '85 16v and wondering how the weight of the damper for the 5.0l compares with the 4.7l. Thanks.
