Help ! Sudden No Auto Gear Shift

Pretty straight forward - I've dropped it with and without the axles attached. Me, I would drop the whole subframe as a single assembly after pulling the calipers and hanging them. Also, the emergency cable has to be disconnected and the speed sensor and what ever is attached to the tranny. Is this in your garage or on a lift?

I was thinking without the axles attached.

Ask Dean_fuller what he would do - he has done this a few times recently. And without the benefit of the liftbars. :-0

Be sure to mark the location of crossmember to body and eccentrics to body. You can use a paint marker on cleaned surfaces. Then realign to marks upon re-install.
Make sure transmission is secured to the jack when lowering/raising - it will tend to roll off. A transmission jack with a tilt platform makes this job a lot easier.
Some good write-ups should return from a search. Good luck.

Yep, have two different colored paint pens.
Don't have a specific trans jack, but am thinking of fabbing something for stability.
Would you know off hand the chain length for the strap to hold trans up ? Might be hard to get a good measure till I'm there.

We disconnected the half shafts from the transmission, and left them attached to the wheel hub, and just rolled the whole assembly out of the way. Be sure to support the half shafts.

I have some ratchet straps if you want to borrow them.

Bienvenue mon ami.
Yes, a very good one for anybody doing this job I think.
Thanks Dean.
Do you plan to do other things while there?
Like the rear seal, TT bearings, torque converter seal, etc...
I know that the trans swap is quite a big job but that would be a great time to do many things.

I would have liked to have done the TT bearings, but I am at the tail end of a catastrophic matter which has caused much fiscal pain. These bearings will have to wait. I was fortunate enough to be able to get the transmission. It is one of Greg's 'new' ones that he found in a warehouse in Germany. This new unit is from the torque tube to the rear axles so I imagine the TC seal will be good to go. As I get the experience of dropping the rear end now, I was thinking of Constantine's Super Bearings when I'm completely on my feet, and putting in Bilsteins all around. So far no signs of bearing dysfunction, but I am cognizant of them.
Thanks again,
Craig

I'm very curious as to the cause. If it were the shift regulator valve in the valve body giving me these symptoms, then why the low Operating Pressure ? If it were a damaged/then blown something-or-other in the transmission itself giving the symptoms and the low Operating Pressure, then why no warnings heard/felt during the failure of these moving parts ?
Well, I think the best thing I could've done for the long term preservation of the car is to put in a new 722 MB transmission while the rare find was still available.

And yes, it is always easier the second time too.
Quite a nice transmission you found there.
Brand new! Wow.
Very curious too about the cause of failure of the other trans.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
