I originally shipped the tap from Melb to Hobart (Tas) rolled in bubble wrap and stuffed in a 2.5" cardboard tube with metal end caps, so it couldnt move. I also stuffed a business card of mine in with it. It came back the same way, and I re-addressed it to Alan and shipped it out, and it seems to have made it across the Pacific OK. I think Alan's packing looks fine to me - no freedom to move around. The only possible improvement might be to actually tape a note showing Alan's name, address and phone no (or that of the recipient) to the shank of the tap, so that in the event of package damage, the tap can be seen to have a home.
I once ordered some Miata parts from Texas to Riyadh via UPS, that were badly packed, and nobody noticed that 2 complete tie-rods fell out . Took me many months to get sorted, with both ends of the trip blaming the other .

OK I will label it for its next trip out - not a bad idea, but I'm pretty convinced the packaging is rock solid. I'm assuming it will get a new small flat rate box every time - You just can't open these things without damaging them - they are free from USPS offices.

Everyone - please don't forget to thank jp for this whole deal!

1 CraigL (St. Louis) << Tap Sent 2/7/2012 -> Delivered 2/10/2012
2 AO (Nr. Detroit)
3 Whitesands (Florida Panhandle)
4 90 S-4 (OC - California)
5 jthwan22 (Central NJ)
6 byrdman454 (St. Louis)
7 auzivision (Indianapolis)
8 Donald (Houston Area)
9 shadowknight (Clearwater FL)

Mike you may want to contact CraigL and see if you can both use it while Craig has it in St. Louis...? (any time now...)

All - I provided above a list of ~locations - if you need to use it you could contact someone near you who is already on the list to help set up some new group usage options - if you do this you may want to help contribute to their costs - couple of 6 packs of beer (or $12) would be a fair split for 2 users...

Not sure if you need this ? - go out & see if you can remove your front towing eye bung - don't wait till you need it in an emergency...!

jp - you shoud have the first payment in your paypal...

Alan,
I PM'ed CraigL about using the tool while it is in STL. Thanks for the suggestion. I will let you know if that works out so I can be taken off the list.

Hi all,

This job went smoothly. The tough part was drilling out the old aluminum plug and removing as much of it as possible.

Using the tap was straightforward: I used lots of cutting oil, reversed direction frequently to prevent binding, cleaned out the debris, and took my time. Mission accomplished.

Thanks to Alan for brokering this deal and to JPitman2 for allowing the group to use this special purpose tap.

Alan,
The box and packaging was in great shape when I got it from Craig. I actually used the same box to send it back! Craig took his time when opening, so it only needed some extra shipping tape to seal it back up.

Sorry, I did not take any pics of mine. I was done in about 15 minutes, but I had already drilled out my aluminum plug and dremeled clean the first several threads many years ago. Someone should probably take pics from start to finish including drilling out the original insert. Drilling out the insert is probably the hardest part of the job. The tap worked flawlessly. No problems at all.
