Might a hole saw like this be able to stay inside the tow socket threads, yet remove enough material that you could get a grip (or just free up if you go deep enough) on the key fragment?

These are made for tile and glass, but I'd guess they'd work on a soft metal like aluminum, too (although the applications listed state "no" for metal).

I have modified the packaging a little, have added a details card and the tap is directly labelled per previous suggestions. Until now the original box has just been reused. Time for a new one - packing is holding up well though!!

Not sure if you need this ? - go out & see if you can remove your front towing eye bung - don't wait till you need it in an emergency...!

Folks - please try to set up group use session if possible (local gathering etc), Please take pictures & make notes on results & techniques - & post back here...

I wonder if you could bump me down a couple notches. I thought this could make for a good Tech Session project for the Sharks in Nowhere gathering here in May (26th to be exact)

This is how I fix mine

Drill small hole

Drill bigger hole and use EZ out to back out cap

Drill and tap metric bolt

Finish tow cap

don't forget to use red thread locking compound so the bolt won't back out. Anti seize to avoid problem again

Not sure - try the 928 towing eye in one with a good socket (unless anyone knows?).

928MS show some steel towing eyes, and quote some threads that DONT match a 928 in pitch (all are 8tpi AFAIK), so I guess you have a 1 in 4 chance - you need to match OD (choice of 2 - 15 or 20mm, or 0.6", 0.8"), and pitch (8tpi, or 928MS version)

One of the surprises of doing this to Dan's '91 S4 (with the front bumper cover off and almost everything out of the way) was that the back of the threaded hole is open to the elements. So (I assume that) most of the reason these plugs corrode so badly is that you get dirt, dust, and water blown in behind the plug, which is angled downhill.

If people aren't aware, an alternative to putting another aluminum plug back in is to get a GTS rubber tow eye plug. At $3 (928Intl's got 'em, I'd bet Roger does too), it's probably the cheapest piece of rubber on a GTS, and a good way to minimize the risk of recurring galvanic corrosion:

Sorry guys - been very busy recently. We had a problem when Donald used the tap (no blame to Donald) Turns out the tap was lengthened early in its life to make it easier to use. so its actually two parts: the tap & a shaft extender. These seem to have been mated by drilling a hole in the end of the tap shaft and milling a matching tongue on the extension shaft. these were then welded together and milled back smooth. It wasn't really obvious but you could see something was done. Well when Donald used the tap the weld broke and now under load the two parts rotate which makes it not a very good tap...

I've had it for 2 weeks+ but haven't had time to get anything done yet. I do have a welder who will work on this next week - so we should be back in action soon. I'll try to weld it and sleeve it this time for added strength.

Sorry for being off the air on this one so long...

Normal service will resume soon...

Back out to Donald first though to finish up.

Alan
