I pulled the cam covers off to do my head gasket job and here is what I was greeted with at 125,000 miles.

Did you check the timing belt orientation?
I have an extract from the WSM (posted a while ago here by Bill?) that the writing on the belt, when lookin at the engine from the front of the vehicle, should be the right way up. I assume this applies to the factory (Conti?) belt. Is this still practiced?
Mine, of course, was put on the wrong way by PO's mechanic and seems too loose (need to get hold of a guage to properly check).
So as my belt will have to come off, I am tempted to send my gears for recoating.
James any pic of the spider behind the gears - or is really obvious should there be a crack?

I do know the dealer did a timing belt job at some early point in the first three or four years of the car's life and then Ron Perry, Dr. Bob and possibly Rob Edwards , et al did a timing belt job about 4 or 5 years ago. So, the gears are probably new(er).
Still, I am happy seeing them in this condition.

Is it just me, or is there a lip there at the edge. The silver edge appears to be higher than the colored part.

Belt appeared to be smooth too, not chewed up.

Good, I figured it was just the picture screwing with me but had to ask.

That looks like Dr. Bob's nail polish on those gears. That TB/WP job was done just before I bought my car. Here's the thread on it:

So after reading this thread it sounds like I am extremely lucky to have you guys previously take care of a **** of a job. I was planning on replacing the water pump with a plastic impeller lasso. Do you know if the pump that was put in was a plastic impeller. I mean it was 2006 so putting a new one in is not a stupid idea anyway. Sounds like the bolts will come out this time. I'll be sure to use anti-seize when i put it back together. My water bridge bolts came right out so that shows the wisdom of anti-seize.
