Default TB-WP party a success although very tedious

I just have to give a huge thanks to two great guys, Keith Widom (928ntslow)and Dr. Bob. These guys helped myself and another member ( I will let him tell his story and give his own thanks) here do our service and dedicated not only their time and knowledge but tools, garage, food, ect. It could not have been done without them!! Also a big thanks to Ryan and michael (?) for the extra helping hands.

My car had 5 of the water pump bolts shear off due to the PO not changing it out at the last TB service and also not using no seize. Lots of soaking got 4 of them to release but the fifth one (the bolt that runs through the TB cover and WP sheared right at the block. Keith spent forever getting it drilled out and it still wouldn't release with an easyout. We kept working it, but unfortunately the easyout sheared off in the hole. These don't drill out so easy....anyway, after a total of a 5 hour delay just trying to get the bolts out, we finally wrapped up my car. Keith was my mentor for my service and kept a cool head and wouldn't give up on getting it repaired and back together. We were constantly tapping Dr. Bobs knowledge and his amazing array of tools usually interrupting him from helping with his service. I definately learned a lot yesterday and appreciate how involved this service is and also how fortunate it is to have folks like Keith and Dr. Bob in this community. Without guys like them I probably wouldn't be able to keep the 928. Keep up on the maintenance to prevent crap like went through with my water pump!! I will post pics later.

Right about that, things like sacrificing family members to automobile gods will typically create rifts.

Sometimes no matter how many times you pray to the shrine, the gods just don't listen. Man, that must have been torture.

I shouldn't say I told you so, but EZ outs should be banned. Seems they break more than they don't. I had a tap of similar material break off below the block surface on my first TB job, and ultimately a diamond tipped Dremel bit made quick work of it.

Keith is probably nursing his aching back today. Bending over like that for hours on end wrecks me for a couple of days.

All hail to dr. bob and Keith!

Tell you what...I tried a Titanium Drill Bit on a broken Easy-Out once...and the Easy-Out won in a landlslide. Those are some extremely hard carbide bits..., but the high speed of the Dremel...with the diamond bit...might just "git er dun"...I don't envy the attempt though. LOTS of work for an issue that generally NEVER should have happened in the first place. Lots easier, to just drill out the broken bolt, an tap new threads if necessary...than to go toe to toe with a busted off Easy-Out. I admire the perserverance though....Atta Boy !!

(Vendor name here) should have a drill template for the water pump bolts made for rent!

I picture hard stainless plate, with (laser cut) holes smaller than the bolts, which would locate on the water pump pins... But how to clamp it down, without using any of the water pump bolt holes?

A template for the exhaust manifold bolts would be cool too, but that might be affected by temperature?

I managed to drill out a bolt then snap the tap off inside the hole. The diamond tip bit is the way to go for tungesten carbide objects, such as EZ outs and taps. You drill with modest pressure for no more than 30 seconds, watching the end bit carefully. If it starts to glow red, back off or the tip will pop off. Anway, it took me about 20 minutes and 2 bits to destroy the tap I had buried in the block, cutting across it with the Dremel, dividing it into 4 pieces until the pieces fell out. Dremel 7105 or 7150 kit. These are ball end. Perhaps a diamond coated shaft rather than ball end might be better, but the ball end worked great, allowing for cuts in any direction.

I used the old pump as a drill guide once. Just put a wind of tape around the outside of the bit. Worked OK.

Especially if you use left handed drill bits. Nice job - Well done!

Yeah, I suppose left hand bits should be on the tool list for a TB/WP job.

Pic #4 is really cool with the nice driveway and 4 great looking 928's hanging around. Maybe our own version of the famous "This is why you study" poster, --, "this is why you study the WSM" poster. Great way to spend a weekend day imo. Work on sharks, then drive em hard.

Maybe make it to fit over the existing block locating dowels...then with the pump safely out of harms way.... UUUUHHHH "Brain freeze"...Sorry Porken. But...if the plate were cut to fit on the dowels as snugly athe pump does...you shouldn't need any bolts to hold it in place.

All hail Keith and the hard work he did. I am sure his back is pretty sore today. That is a great idea using a template as a guide for drilling. Someone needs to step up and get it done. Finding a center on the bolt is not easy. We did run to Home Depot and buy Carbide bits and they really didn't work against the easyout. It just took a lot of time and perserverence on Keiths part. It would have been a next day job if Dr. Bob hadn't had all of the tools a guy could ever dream of having!! When I left at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Bob was still hard at work on the other car but was wrapping it up. They too had a dilema to deal with but I will let them add to this and tell their side of the story.
