The 928 is a permanent fixture around here, will add a second to the stable once I have a bit more garage space (working on that now). I bought my M6 because it reminded me a lot of the 928 in terms of concept and in the way it drives, even if it is considerably less attractive looking than the shark.

Impressive how you consider the M6 less attractive. Couldn't agree more.
Cool car though....
(please excuse my anti-BMW attitude. I'm holding out for a big change in the direction of the company. They are way too tied up on SUVs and SAVs, and appealing to women drivers, than they are to delivering anything near the ultimate driving machine. This rant only relates to post ca. 2002 or there-abouts, w/the advent of iDrive, throttle-by-wire, and the abhorent X3)

Wow Lots of different ideas and it sounds like some buy us opinions.

I wish someone would buy me that Bugatti Veyron

I also saw one, and kind of like'd the 911gt3

Those that hate the looks of the GT-R must really hate the Citroen Survolt

or the Connaught Type-D GT now that is ugly

I will not get rid of the 928 as the bodies don't seem to rust, and its to much fun, and I never get it done because there is so much to do

Lots of nice super cars out there but nothing I will ever even touch.

But If I could have one . . .
it would be the 2011 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid, Best looking car on the planet, IMHO

BMWs are Fine automobiles....BUT when a STOCK 2011 Mustang GT can basically tie or beat a 2011 M3 at every performance "standard"...even on the Ring... and you will never mistake the Stang for a Kia/Honda/Toyota/Hyundai .....and at HALF the price.....hmmmm.

The "Ultimate Driving Machine" has lost it's luster IMHO

There are lots of great "Cool Status Symbols"...totally unusable to their potential in anyone's normal life...only rarely could you even enjoy them as intended. if ever.

IMHO, there is only one street legal car that is King of "Smiles for $$$$$" that can be used to more of it's "Enjoyment Potential" on a day to day basis than anything else I have seen/driven.

Start at the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway in that...and by the "short" time until you get to Cherokee (the southern end)...you ill have a PERMAMENT SMILE...on your face! (along with a few bugs, but that's the real world)

The M6 provides quite a few smiles even when it is not being flogged within an inch of its life. The sound of the V10 is better than a cup of coffee in the morning and the car has a great dual nature, it can schelp around town as a luxury car with a decent ride or you can press the "M button" and unleash the beast. The SMG transmission, while deeply flawed in some ways (it is a royal pain in traffic), actually gives the car personality and keeps it from being some sort of commodity transport unit like a Lexus.

Your M6 has a lot of road presence, very classy and serious on the outside, I always liked the ext looks, not as good as the 928 of course but up there with the astons for laid back top performers of today.

Let's hope BMW keeps it up with suv's, they are responsible for 10,000+ decent jobs around Greenville SC. The X6 drives incredibly well and looks nice to me.

Since nothing to me (and many others commenting here) looks or is better than a 928 for the role of fun ride, maybe something on 2 wheels is what is needed. A lot of fun in a different way.

Glad to see such 'passionate' responses.

My consideration of alternatives does include a reality check on price, unlike some here. This is not pie-in-the-sky, but rather something unique and worthy for less than $50K

Others that I would consider include convertibles such as the BMW M6 (my other current car is an e38 740iL)

Or an SL55 AMG

(This is the car bigs recently bought - love the colour):

I am sure some will say they REALLY like the way the car looks, but like the PanAm the ball was dropped in the worst kind of way (almost the polar opposite of the PanAm actually) and there is just no excuse...

Get a Maser GranTurismo or a DB9! Either would be a perfect upgrade and replacement for a GTS...little else would do. Maybe an '01 or newer 911 Twin Turbo...
Geez James, why not tell us how you really feel!

I think the GTR looks ok... for a Japanese car!

The only downside to designs like that is 5 years from now it will look dated and people will say "what is that ugly car".

I remember seeing the very first Honda Prelude being unloaded off of the car carrier (my brother bought it) ...what an amazing looking car it was...then.

I will let you decide how it looks now..

I bought one of the very first Accura Legends at the dealer...what an incredible design...then.

...and now???

Very, Very few car designs will stand up over time....the 928 is certainly one of them.

Hi Randy,

Great thread by the way, THANKS!!

Concerning that BMW...is it a BMW or a Lexus SC with different badges/lights....hmmmm, a pic is worth a thousand words.

Aside from the shoulder line on the hood and the radiused wheel wells the two cars are chalk and cheese. The proportions are totally different, while the detailing on the M6 is a bit out there in places (even I don't like the trunklid) the overall proportions are quite good. The Lexus looks like a potato.
