Tony - my car was actually a '64, without the distinctive grill. It only occurred to me last night that while I was driving it around in high school, reinforcing my reputation as a dork, Nancy was driving around in her new '69 Camaro.

Dave,

The 3 pedal 599's are almost $500k asking nowadays... That's almost GTO territory as they're 550-600 and up...!

I agree with the face card gin/rummie game as I'm also certifiable

Excellent condition, low miles 599 F1's have pretty much stayed at $150 - $180k depending on options and history. Cars with stories are $110 - 140k. HTGE handling package optioned 599's are asking $200k - $240k

I am thinking that the F1 599 Fiorano GTB's are going to pop pretty soon and unless the economy takes a real crap, this is the time to step up. There's just something about the V 12 that makes my heart beat a bit faster...

And... The tailoring is impeccable...

Yes, I also think they're at the bottom of the depreciation curve unless the economy takes a serious cliff diving

I also think the one to have other than a GTO is the HGTE post 2009 with the option from the factory instead of the dealer installed one.

It's a disease gotta sell one of the companies and grab a GTO and a bigger stable

Hitting the scales at 5,000 lbs screams "drive one first" before buying! Thats a lot of weight to be tossing around... Oh wait - My Cayenne Turbo S is close to that and it is a scorcher!!!
...

Tradition and marketing trumped respect for language. Originally, "turbo" meant a piece of special hardware; for EVs, extra oomph can come by merely changing some constants in the headers of software code. Porsche jumped the shark when it put Turbo badges on high-end models of cars that are all turbocharged. They've merely gone from silly to super silly for the Taycan.

It has a nice ring to it, of course, so I put a Turbo badge on my Model 3. I feel a little silly since it's not a Performance model, but not otherwise. (The Performance model does not have any special hardware - just different headers, software headers.)

Though the Model 3 weighs 4200 lbs, it feels like a light car. I don't know how they do that. The standard 18" tires are wearing quickly, though, more in the rear despite having dual motors and 50:50 weight balance. The Taycan is 5000 lbs?

Rudely parked at my Porsche dealer for a cars and coffee. But manager liked it there - might help sell Taycans.

Massive, massive disappointment on the Taycan sub-forum.

Yeah. Seems really dumb. Opportunity to use a clean sheet for nomenclature missed. The current is stretched passed reality already (since almost all models have one or more turbochargers.)

On the Taycan forum, Pete Stout has some right-seat impressions that make one go “hmmmmm... interesting.”

I joke that the turbo moniker is a reference back to the "turbo" buttons on PC's back in the 90's that actually make them slower.

But yeah, it's just a trim level now.

I also question its price point. The Turbo S trim starts at $186K IIRC and the competing Tesla Model S P100D starts at nearly half that.

They should have aimed at the $65-75K price point to get more sales and make a bigger splash in the market. But maybe newer variants will follow at lower prices like with what Tesla did.

Word.

I remember when the Cayenne came out and was slammed by Porsche faithful, yet now I have two of them and love driving them! Heck, 928's were hammered on by 911 faithful and water-cooled 911's as well. Today I drove my 911 Turbo hard and as you know they are spectacular!
And again brother: Word (Did you see the 6-speed manual Cayenne GTS on BaT the other day? Lucky for me I told CarChick about it only after it hammered.)

One thing I am Jonesing for, is a modern - cutting edge replacement/evolution of the 928! I want a real GT coupe. Two doors and a proper hatch for practical space utilization.
That would be, theoretically, very cool.

I did follow up with a selected reading on the Taycan forum and indeed, there is great disappointment.
I for one am disappointed that it exhibits only passing resemblance to the Mission-E and then, only, if you get the optional wheels. I'm surprised that the range for the top-of-the-line model doesn't beat Tesla.

The price doesn't surprise me at all.

I also had a longish conversation with drooman about it today and he is totally hating on it based on the idea regarding the quickly outdated software and lack of maintainability of the car.
Sure, but that's no different from the problem with today's Porsches. If one hates the Taycan for that one must also hate the 991/981/992/95B etc.

I for one am *concerned* about the long-term maintainability of my 9[98]1 fleet for the same reasons. Way, way too much stuff has to be VIN-coded with the PIWIS laptop in order to function if replaced. The only practical way this generation of Porsches will be on the road 10+ years from now is if Porsche's 'lock' on the interface is wrestled from their closed grip. For the moment, I'm relying on the general enthusiast market pull to make that happen.

Now, VS. Tesla, Porsche (and all other car companies) need to get 'software' figured out. Fixing bugs via over-the-air updates has to be SOP for all of them or they will get crushed.

As a completely out-of-left-field aside: I would like to see 80%+ of the code in modern cars open-sourced for many reasons. At the top of that list of reasons is: bugs would get found and stomped out at a much, much higher rate.

So the jury is out for me on this one...
My jury is always out. I call them in when it is time to make a decision. Until that point, I gather data.

What? Is this your first day? Porsche are always priced 1.5-2x of the objective-by-the-numbers competition. Pick any new Porsche and you can easily find another non-Porsche with the same "performance numbers" for 50-75% of the price.

They should have aimed at the $65-75K price point to get more sales and make a bigger splash in the market. But maybe newer variants will follow at lower prices like with what Tesla did.
What Porsche is doing makes perfect sense and, to an extent, is a page torn from Tesla's book. But, indeed, it is as simple a truth for Porsche now as it was for Tesla then:

Production is limited. If you can only make X number of cars you price the car at a level that limits the market to X buyers.

Or, in other words, you sell the highest trim models first to those who are able, willing and eager to buy at whatever price.

Lower-spec Taycans will come along as production increases and bugs are worked-out. (And there will be bugs.)

The real question is what will a Taycan 4S (hypothetical, but expected trim) look like when compared to a Tesla (or other EV) that's priced much lower? Does the Taycan platform exhibit the "Porscheness" that has always drawn folks to pay-up?

Here's my next one - 2009 Bentley Continental GT Speed with 15,000 miles on her. Sapphire metallic over saddle leather interior with upgraded 20" wheels.

Bought this week. What you think?
