Blown headgasket, time to get dirty

Hard to be 100% sure looking at that 3rd pic but it looks like you have either the wrong tensioner or wrong tensioner arm. The pushrod between the tensioner and arm should not be at that kind of angle. If it's just an optical illusion, great... but if it's not you'll want to "fix it right".
The idler arm bushings must be missing.

I am surprised that belt is still on and timing the cams at all. You can see uneven wear on the oil pump gear and the belt position difference between passenger and driver cams makes me feel queasy.

I understand the difficulty...but it isn't hard enought to warrant that..
The front and rear of the factory cam carrier gaskets that have the moly coating on them don't stick to the head or the cam carrier, while the center section will stick. They move and split. You can usually see this, by looking right along the outer edge.
Some people apply Gasacinch or some other contact adhesive to keep that gasket from moving while they are trying to get the cam carrier on....as it is pretty easy to tear that gasket. This is the "kiss of death" for that gasket. Might as well tear it iinto little pieces and install it. When I install the cam carriers, I always have a little "pile" of gaskets, so that I can throw away any that get "compromised" during installation....
It is a PITA, the first time...the second, third, and fifth times just make you crazy. You really need to do yourself a favor and throw that stock gasket in the trash, because if you are trying to learn what it takes to make that gasket work, on your own, you are going to need "wing nuts" on that engine before you are done.

Thanks for the input. Interesting. I actually tore one gasket near the coated portion during installation of the passenger side cam carrier, and funnily enough, the replacement I ordered at CarQuest the next day arrived torn at the same spot . It didn't occur to me that this was a weakness in the gasket... I'll do my best to see if I can spot a tear in the system.
If this gasket gets torqued unevenly, has any oil, has any other sealant, or gets even slightly overtorqued...it will split and push out.
Fortunately, this gasket got superceeded when we were doing a boatload of 944 engines, many years ago....so we were able to work out how to install it and use it (until we had some made) on that model...which is not nearly as hard as messing with the cam carrier on a 928!
I think if I had to learn the lessons on how to install and use that gasket on the 928 model, I might be working on different vehicles...

Dont forget to break the crank bolt free while you can lock down the flywheel.
Do you have the engine removal instructions from the manual?

27 mm crank bolt. Note the orientation of the big-*** washer underneath the bolt. Damper needs to be on so you can read the numbers from the front of the engine. No orientation to the pulleys.

No reason not to take the pulley off now, might give you that much more clearance if you decide to pull the engine, but it's not critical either way. Once the accessory belts are off, you should spray a little Kroil or PB blaster between the pulleys to start soaking the balancer to ease its removal, if it's not been off in a while.

Ok, i'm looking at my belt tensioner, and the shaft is at an angle. I did a lot of researching old posts on the subject, and the porkensioner seems the way to go. So, stupid question. I couldn't find where to get one? I asume I need the one with the air pump bracket?
