That tube is an exhaust sampler. You can remove it and use a ball bearing and lug nut to plug the opening on the exhaust header.
Sweet, thank you!!

I had a problem with my timing belt rubbing against the idler arm and it happened to be an incorrectly sized spacer behind the pivot point. My piston rode at an angle as well. The spacer is quite thick.
Did you figure out the issue on your tensioner arm?
Actually, I think I did. Hkp7 hit it on the head. Who ever did the last TB/WP didn't do it corrrectly. There were NO spacers there at all. After looking a little closer at the WSM ( I know, I know ), I saw the problem. Long story short, I ended up putting a small spacer behind the smaller roller to keep it off the WP, and the thickest washer I could find between the roller and the idler arm. Now it works great, AND the push rod from the tensioner is nice and straight. And all the pullys are are aligned up better viewed from the side. With the things I have found so far during this project, it's amazing this car ran at all.

I got flycut, but I was only a baby and don't remember it.
OUCH!!

what kind of work have you done to the heads?
Did you have a valve job done?
Did you get them welded?
Did you get them flycut?
um............well.................none. I know I should have, and I guarentee you I will regret it, but I just dont have that kind of time and money to spend on this car right now. No excuse I know. For now I will just have to hope for the best. If anything, when I DO have to do later, now I know how to do it and hopefully it should go faster.

Yes, you need to drop the rack to get to the lower engine-mount bolts. Remove the two hydraulic lines (and get four new copper sealing washers), remove the five big bolts and four (IIRC) little ones, and let the rack hang down. You don't need to undo the tie-rods or steering shaft.
Bummer. I figured as much.

Thanks again for all your insight and knowledge. I really appreciate it. The engine is mostly back together. Hopefully some parts will come in the mail tomorrow, and I can start fighting that engine back into the car.

Engine back in. Man points earned!!

Anyone have any idea how to move the transmission forward about 2mm? I can't get the 2 tranny bolts back in.

Thank you MrMerlin. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. It was actually the two bolts holding the transmission to the rear cross member. I think the new engine mounts made the whole assembly sit a little further back. However I did rectify the issue. All I can say is sometimes you just gotta get all white trash on it.

This is how much of a dumb *** I am. Got everything back together today, As far as i know (and knew ), everything was all hooked up and ready to go. SOOOOOOOO, I thought I give it a go at starting it. Found a fitting on the fuel injector rail I forgot to tighten, a little gas on the engine, no big deal. Kept cranking it over, but it wouldn't fire. So I got to have alook see, HUGE puddle of oil on the floor. I started to think the worst. Like who would buy this car in this state. Probably no one. Forgot the head gasket, blew it out AGAIN, forgot a cap or plug somewhere...... Then it hit me.

What I learned today, is that it is of the utmost importance to make sure you remember to reinstall the F'N OIL FILTER!!!!!!!!!!!.
What a dumb ***!! 3 or 4 quarts of what used too be perfectly good motor oil, wasted. Bummer. Now I will have to wait for tomorrow to get more oil.

So a picture of the Valdez would be appropriate.

Isn't there some redneckengineering.com site that would thrive on that picture of using the Ram as a backstop? It's actually a creative solution if you don't have the luxury of having the rear end of the car up in the air.

I got halfway thru your post and was worried that something bad had happened. Just shopvac up the spill, let the particulates settle overnight, and just put it back in the engine. You have a new filter that will take care of the rest...

Erik--

Make really sure that pushing the gearbox forward like that didn't add pressure to the driveshaft. Pushing forward on the crank isn't good, pushing back on the torque converter bearings isn't good.

I was concerned about that as well, so I only pushed as much as I needed to get the bolts in and no more.

Don't worry. You're not the first to do this....I've seen the very best mechanics do this. Tell everyone you were flushing the passage from the oil pump to the filter.

GB is right, if you have not screwed one up, then you have not worked on enough of them.

that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!

On the subject if dumb stuff, I have a quick dumb question. I got everything in and hooked up, but it won't start. It turns over wonderfully, but won't fire off. It sounds like there is no spark. So here's my question. I'm not sure I hooked up the starter correctly. Does the big terminal have both the orange wire from the front AND the large black wire from the rear on it? If not, where does that black get connected? I forgot where it went when I unhooked it. Guess it's been to long since I started.
