I have a few that are still in ok shape, just starting to see some specks of the base metal.

Used cores - machine to remove the old gear teeth, then press in a new gear tooth ring.

Wonder if new composite polymers are up to the task? Probably not up to the heat degradation.

Just thinking out loud...

Whats the closest standard production gear, then maybe modify the area that couples to the cam?

Are there any obvious improvements that could be made to the original design?

conversion to pushrods?

Not the end of the 928 at all, but the cost of good cam gears is suddenly very open ended.

Just to understand the mkt a bit better, what sort of interval (roughly) do the cam gears get changed? I have 69k on my car, and my gears looked fine - opted not to change...hope I don't regret it.

How about giving Lindsay Racing a call, if you are going to make some from scratch, might as well make them adjustable:

I've already talked to them and they are interested. I just need to get them a set of 928 gears to run a sample / quote.

If I see ANY shinny spots they get changed, once they get past the anodizing they go very quickly.

Looks like an opportunity for the gifted in the community to sort out a solution. Just changed mine. I kept the cores in case they are needed. I can donate them for testing purposes if need be since I'm useless otherwise. As for the question about wear. I had 159,000 on mine and they had never been changed according to the extensive history. in the last 40,000 miles the PO started neglecting tension and my trip across country with improper tension probably led to an early demise.

Yes. Once they get through the anodized coating, the shape of the gear itself is quickly changed. Tough to find gears worth re-coating.

Seems like if we could avoid the anodizing process it would be a significant cost saver.
We're already working on making these gears. Knew they were going to be NLA. Bought up enough gears to keep my needs satisfied for the next few months. Unless people hoard the gears, there should be enough to go around until we have new ones available.

Hoarding is absolutely not a problem in the 928 community. *looks at the boxes in the garage from 2002 through 2009 of new unopened parts*

No problem at all.

I have been recoating any good ones I have found. I have a number of them and have a few in field testing. So far zero wear.
