Thanks Roger. I didn't know that. That's why I asked. But it never hurts to have more opinions. If you look at that thread, I think you'll see it's the most experienced group of engineers and machinists anywhere.

I decided to have a live e-chat with porsche and this is how it went. The first part is the e-mail back from Norden Porsche
Good Morning Brad,
I can get that Cam gear for you for $632.70. It would take about 1-2 weeks to get it here with all the Christmas shutdowns happening right now. I would guess that I shoud see it early in the New Year if you were to place an order today. The part would have to be prepaid before I can order it. let me know if you have any questions.

Sean-I'll have them done in China out of marble colored quartz and sell them for $50. I'll still tell everyone they are made of marble, and they will be hand carved . . .by children who get $.09 each for their work.

Before someone starts making 928 cam gears out of concrete, I inquired of several dealers and only one responded with availability and price...Sunset. I just ordered at $291 each. At least, in the short term, I'll feel comfortable that the build material, weight, and tolerances will be a known item. That is, I hope so. Just because it's a Porsche brand part doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good one evidenced by better stuff redesigned or made by PorKen, OBhave, 928 Motorsports, 928sRUS, et al.
Five years is coming on and I have a Tbelt/enhanced water pump change to do pretty soon so I might as well make sure the cam gears are in top shape too. If the originals are still good, it sounds like there may be a market for them.

Nice coincidence that Gates who makes the belt also makes gear stock.
Roger, you may have this all buttoned up, but Gates seems to have been good to you before.

Bill,
Thanks but I already talked to them and the pitch we need is special order - in other words very high set up and tooling costs. Way beyond my budget and most others I am sure.

Roger, do you think that the new gear from Porsche will be a much longer wearing gear than the old one?
Could that have had any impact on the supersession of the gear?
Or was it just money?

Greg,
Absolutely 100% that is why they changed the design. The anodized finish and harder material will help the gear last longer. Time will tell on how long but anything is better than the previous design.
They waited until all the existing gears were sold and then on the next iteration of the price list announced the supersession.
They are in the process of doing the same for the earlier HTD 16v gears.
