I don't have a really comprehensive pic of the condition of my interior.
The front seat pascha is ripped, bolsters torn badly. Carpet is tatty, dirty and sun-faded.
I wouldn't want to drive it very far. Not comfortable, IMHO.
Edit: Found this pic - seat on the LEFT is the drivers seat.

Jim,
How does the driver seat look at the bolster areas? Did any of these press cars have the manual 911 style seats installed? I know some of the early production cars did.
I still have these that I need to repair. The inserts are PERFECT! I still need to remove and resew the seams but they will end up nice I am sure.

I think they could work as a replacement seat for my short-term plans. Then all I'd have to find are some rear seats, and install new carpet.
I'm okay with a velour dash cover for the short-term.

Jim:
Dave Tassinari has a '79, 928 with your interior, I believe. I don't know if he is considering patring it out. But you might want to contact him at: dtassinari@accentindustrial.com.

Similar 911 style seats were used during development in some 928 prototypes but they were replaced with stock seats once they became available.

amazing undertaking of a truely wonderful example of a 928! i admire your dedication to this restoration and admire your patience in waiting for everything to be correct! i'll keep an eye out for the parts you are looking for. i have a couple Porsche contacts in my area and since you are only one state away, shipping or driving time would be minimal!

911 style seats appear in some Project 928 book pictures. Then they were not used in until '80 MY cheap 4.5L models accorging to PET. It makes sense for factory to replace them in early '78 MY demo cars as they wanted to show press as close to actual production model cars as possible. Also all early brochures show comfort seats without mention of cheaper options.

However, an earlier photo of Six shows 911 seats (in plaid).

My understanding regarding the press cars is Porsche pushed hard to have them finished by late February (Started early January). It may not have been the most organized, eg. SN 0016 to receive engine #0021, but instead received #0026.
My guess is Number Six may have been one of the first ones finished enough to get it out for testing or early press photos. This is when Auto Motor und Sport snapped the shot of the interior w/911 seats (shown above).
Date stamp on the Recaro seats reads 11-FEB-1977, which leads me to believe these were available for Porsche to install nearer the 11th hour, prior to shipping the cars to France for the press launch, February 23rd.

Should be on the road at the 928's Down on the Farm, #6 Wrenching Party, in a couple weeks.
Just need to swap out the LBJ's and an intermittent FP, and down the road we will go!

In preparation, just upped insurance to Haggerty (agreed value $15K).

^^^^^^
Ummmm...YEA...they even shared factory space WITH Porsche. I think pretty much every Porsche seat from the 928 forwards at least was a RECARO seat actually. Erkka probably knows more, but they even said something about that on the factory tour I took back in 2000...

Recaro was originally called Reutter caroserie or something similar. It was independed company up to early sixties. They made car bodies and interior parts as subcontractor for Porsche among others. When Porsche started making 911 they did most of the early bodies, Karmann did some. When production numbers got bigger Porsche bought their entire body manufacturing but they kept interior deparment and just changes company name to Recaro. They have been making practically all Porsche seats since then. Probably also designed them for Porsche.

I wrote this up for the Porsche Famiy Tree, and figured to post it up here for good measure.
"Number Six"
1977 Pre-Series Porsche 928 - Press Car
One of eleven pre-production 928's built to be used for early press review.
Late February 1977, just weeks before its reveal to the public at the Geneva Auto Salon, members of the worldwide press convened near Nice, France to see the much anticipated new Porsche 928 for their first time. Number Six was one of the cars they saw.
Driven by Joe Rusz for the Road & Track article, "928 Technical Analysis & Driving Impressions". Featured in Auto Motor und Sport's "Motor Revue", where it appeared on the cover.
Following its press duty, Number Six was then used for testing at Weissach and remained a Werks factory car until October of 1978, when it was sold to a German.
10 years later, the car resurfaced in North America, when imported into southern California, then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. There it was owned by a high-stakes professional poker player.
Not long after, Six was sold to a man from Lake Tahoe where it was kept and driven for two decades.
In Fall 2010, I purchased Six from a second Lake Tahoe owner who had the car for a couple years.
I had it shipped to my father's farm in Michigan where the car resides in storage, as I plan its restoration. I've visited once, and found it to be in amazing original condition for its age. Most every piece is there, and it runs great!
In late 2010, Number Six won an award as the oldest Porsche 928, as part of Porsche's anniversary celebration of 60 years in America!
Also, Excellence wrote about my restoration plans in their online magazine.
Feel free to check it out on the family tree
