Done. Replaced the sender gasket too. Flushed with Acetone.

#6 has an intermediate piece p/n 928 356 617 00 in lieu of 2nd Fuel Pump (FP).

Yes, there are extra wire leads for a 2nd FP.

Here's the 2nd FP location prior to switching to the in-tank pump in '79 (image courtesy of Dave A. 'Sharkskin')

Not sure about this altogether. Read below.

That's right Erkka. Unfortunately, I can't find an explicit VIN shift from outer 2nd FP, to in-tank FP.

Item 25, 2nd outer FP, was shown to be used thru all of '78 for the US, but only thru VIN 00375 ROW.
Item 25a, intermediate piece, doesn't have a VIN break for '78.
- It's safe to assume it wasn't used for all 928's in '78.
- It's possible to assume it was used for all ROW for '78.
- But it's also possible that #6 had a 2nd FP, but was removed at the factory, and retrofitted with the intermediate piece (post VIN 00375). I will followup on this when I've had a chance to inspect Number One.

Only sort of related, but this struck me as odd:
Item 2, shown as a in-tank fuel strainer p/n 928 201 801 03, was apparently replaced by in-tank fuel filter p/n 928 201 801 04 (?) at VIN's:

9288101288 ROW
9288200054 US
9288209528 Japan

My guess is both were strainers, but with different names.

For reference, here is what my setup looks like:

Yep, did a very similar thing w/ #36. Next time I will do it myself, with a metric tube bender & flare tool.

That image is not altogether current.

Inspection of Number One, built at the same time as Number Six (Jan-Feb '77), yielded more questions than answers.
Most of it's fuel delivery lines are non-production. As are the layout of the fuel filter and accumulator.
I expected them both to have the same setup. Not the case... but why?

I'm thinking #6 had a factory retrofit at some point in '78. Possibly it was used as a prototype for things like this.
I was surprised to find such an early 928 with production level fuel delivery sub-systems. Also surprised to find most p/n's listed in PET.

Other evidence to a retrofit is a fuel tank with a 78 mfg. date. Not the original, must have been replaced.

Here's #1's setup for reference.

Default NOS goodness

Here's a couple of interesting parts I've collected.

Early style hood hinge. Noticed it's painted drab green.

928 511 042 02 (superceded by 928 511 042 04)

Early (78-79) warmup regulator. Often called 053.

928 606 109 02

Thanks to the good folks at 928 Specialists for making these part available to me!

Default More NOS goodness

Euro/ROW fog lamps (innermost lamp)

P/N 928 631 414 00 and 928 631 414 01 (Bosch numbers 0306403001 and 0306403002)

I hope you guys don't mind me posting these here. I figured this is as good a place as any to inventory these parts.

Default Restoration update for #6

This is kindof an x-post from my #1 Restoration Thread, but I feel it's important to let you all know I decided to transfer over my large-scale long-term restoration project from #6 car to my earlier 928, Number One.
It wasn't an easy decsion to make, because I'd grown quite attached to the red car, and its magazine history gives it such personality!
It's just the right thing to do. #1 is the first 928... it deserves to get the full treatment! ...and I can't handle two large-scale restorations.

Good news is I'll continue moving forward with my "driver-survivor" short-term restoration plans for the #6 car. Hoping to get the car down to Shark's in Hell, next year.

It's been almost a year since I bought this car (8-21-10), and what a fun year it's been! I would've never expected to be doing the things I've been doing, with these super-cool early 928s. What a ride... and it's only the beginning!

Thanks for all the support ya'll have given me over the past year. Very much appreciated!

I'll be back in Michigan mid-October, so hopefully I can finish the fuel tank install, and get it running again before year's end.

Check your math bro...you are OVER a year on owning this bit of Porsche history my friend! In fact you are nearly 13 months out on your ownership! I can't wait to see how #1 and #6 turn out... Keep your eyes peeled for that EARLIEST auto for me... Well, we know 35 is not here, so we need to find the earliest that IS here, or somehow find 35 in Germany (or wherever it is) and get it here!

Not sure, but #1 and #6 may have been featured at the same time, but at different locations, in the following quarterly (Car Styling Quarterly, July 1977). Check out Jorj's scans, below. I have an extra copy (there are a few more pics, especially of #6), so PM me!
