Default Car Styling Quarterly #19, July 1977

Herr'nandez was kind enough to send my a copy of Car Styling Quarterly #19. Thanks man!

Great read, especially if you read Japanese. The English translations read funny too! Also, written by an Italian.
So we have an international cornucopia here.

A few pics....

Hey it has the full center console between the rear seats... Neat. I had not noticed that before!

No problema.
One day, two and two came together, and I grabbed the book off the shelf to verify - and there she (SC-X 2137) was!

And it looks different from those I have seen. Also, no cassette box.

Mine does not have the cassette box either, and it does have the rear consol like #6. I just noticed no stickers in the door jamb.

Yea, the Euro/RoW didn't have a build-date sticker in the door jamb.

This are by far the best pictures I've seen on these pre-production cars.
The information in them is huge!

- black trim on quarter window & hatch
- different plunger switch to turn-on the rear hatch light
- fold-up tool kit in the spare tire
- no rear sunvisors

I also have black trim on rear window and hatch. Wasn't that the early standard?

Ed,
I believe so, but don't know if the finish is black oxide, black anodize, or otherwise.

A reputable person asserted they were stainless steel, but I'm not sure.

I need to start figuring out the material and finish. I'll throw a magnet on them this evening to see what we're working with. Will report back.

Early csrs often had a metal colour finish, not black, for the rear quarters. I always wondered why because it stands out but doesn't look very nice because the door windows have black trim. Never understood why the rear quarters were in metal.

Nicole said it was to accentuate the shapes of the upper 1/4s and 1/4 glass. Gunar

I'm not seeing it guys.

Quick check shows the trim is aluminum, which means they were most likely anodized black.
I understand anodizing fades, and quite possibly fades fast.
But reviewing these pictures closely reveals a very dark color anodizing on the trim. I don't see any negligible difference btw the quarter trim or any other trim.

Am I missing something?

In this comparison, I show a new-old-stock corner-piece next to the original trim.

Looking back at what was said, it looks like it was a recommendation not to paint the trim body color. Gunar

My 78 (#535 US) had black trim all around when I got it in 1979. The door window trim was high gloss while the rest was a matt finish. The quarter window trim faded while the the rear hatch and window did not. It has the rear console with an ash tray and lighter. Deleting the rear console was part of the later cars to reduce cost - (81-82 US) It also has drop down vanity mirror and light on the passenger's side since it did not have a sun roof.

Notice the single exterior mirror. The right mirror was an option on the early cars although I think all the US cars came with the right mirror.

There does not seem to be any fender welting. My 78 had the drop down tool kit.

Not shown is the spare tire cover - which was made of particle board. Or the gas cap which is stainless steel

Cassette box was later invention. It came in '80 MY.

Early MY cars had box between rear seats. Non box version was invented to cut costs for early eighties models and was mostly combined with sport seats and cheap 911 style seats used in many ROW '80-82 MY 4.5L cars.
