Do the wheels stay silver...or black?

Just my 2c worth I'd keep them silver, black wheels suit some cars but personally I think they're few and far between. If you want it to look like a 90's Toyota Supra or some other Jap tuner car go with black. If you want a modern colour, i.e. the green you've used which I think looks great, but want to retain a class look on the car then I'd say stick with the silver and the nice coloured centres you've got.
I suppose the bottom line is it's down to either you or your son and personal preference, could you try photoshopping a picture you've taken recently with the wheels back on to see what it may look like with them black? It may give you you a better idea of which you'd prefer but I'd go with the silver.

Silver. No black stripe kit, either.

Definitely Silver or maybe a slightly darker shade of silver but not black.

Guess I am the dissenter here... I would go with a beautiful shiny black finish... If you stick with silver then paint the center caps the same green as the car and paint the crests... I did that on my light blue car. Looks cool...

If you really decide that they need to be refinished, I'd stay with silver but with just a hint of gold tone. It will warm up the look a bit and go very nicely with the green. IMHO anyway.

Bronze.
Black or silver wheels only go so far on a green car. I painted mine bronze before the larger brake upgrade, and they were purrrrfect. I still miss them.
Bronze the hand-down best color for phonedial wheels IMHO.
