Dean I would suggest to use the Weldwood brush on adhesive for the liners your going to install, most of the spray on adhesives simply fail,
after a few days to months of sun heat.
The Weldwood will be a one time application , I have done more than a few interiors the only stuff that works without rework is the Weldwood.
Its about 14.00 for a QT can at Home Depot.

Great color choice BTW

He will give you a good deal when you finally buy it.

I remember the first time when my Dad bought something off from me, as opposed to me buying it off from him. Just how life goes, I guess.

Assuming you mean the Weldwood toluene-based contact cement, I have had that fail under automotive interior applications, in direct sunlight/heat. I had good, clean, prepared surfaces. I do not know the best adhesive.

Well, the most recent is in my '78. I used that stuff on my rear 1/4 panels, and door windowsillls. The fabric is naugahyde (sp?) and the substrate is that formed pressboard material. I prepped both sides with plenty of acetone and paper towels.

I have stripped Weldwood-glued plastic laminates, wood veneers, thin metals, etc off of substrates with a heat gun and a putty knife. I think that contact cement works best in applications where heat and/or shear forces are not an issue.

I was a professional woodworker for 20+ years, and have used a lot of different glues/adhesives. I chose the Weldwood because I felt it was the best product for the job, that I knew of. But I knew it wasn't perfect. In retrospect, I should have researched my choice a litte more... just because I had the stuff lying around the shop was a poor excuse to use it.

I am not too familiar with the automotive market adhesives. I would bet that 3M must make a better one for these applications... they seem to make the best products in my experience. I can tell you that their high-strength spray-on adhesive (#90? in the green can) is no better that the Weldwood brush-on stuff.

I wonder if the 2-part polyurethane construction adhesives may be a better choice. They are similiar to Gorilla glue, but without the foaming and without the need of moisture to cure. I do not know how they would work on a material that is somewhat thermally pliable, though.

Now that I think of it, I have used 3M's "Hood-liner Adhesive" to reattach the hoodliner in my Mercedes. It has held up for 2 summer's worth of Texas underhood heat so far... and the application was FAR from ideal (there was zero prep to the surfaces, and the liner itself is kind of crumbling away, I just shot the crap as best as I could into the 2'x3' sag and pressed it together). The stuff was very expensive, but good products usually are. Also it smelled unlike other contact adhesives I have used- very toxic smelling (which is usually a sign of the good stuff). I am certain that the Weldwood and the #90 would fail in that application.

did you also use staples to secure the back sides of the covering?
If not then thats why the failures occurred,
i have repaired many door panels and all I can say is ,
Once and Done with the Weldwood YMMV

No staples. My bad. Though there really wasn't enough material in the hollow of the panels to staple anyway.

Been working at the upholstery shop a lot recently. I have a few items I need to purchase before I move forward on the bumpers and dash install . I hope to have the bumpers painted in the next couple of weeks.

Still working at the shop and bad weather is expected so it may be a while till I have a good update. Thought I would share some more pics showing the body work and some "before and after" shots. Also one that compares color to a 2011 Camaro in similar lighting...I'm glad it looks close.

I am in need of a good evaporator for this 1980 US car. The old was was destroyed ( by me ) when I was taking it out. Please PM me if you have a good one for sale.

Thanks.
