Nope. Usually a car (C5) with bolt-ons (full exhaust/intake/pulley) and a good tune is above 350rwhp. Add a cam and it'll usually go over 400.

I just ordered my update, I'm looking forward to getting the updated stuff! Now I need to figure out a weight loss program for the car. Something that will keep the car daily drivable and comfortable.

Ken,
Just a note of thanks. I (finally) got round to installing the V3.4 chips yesterday, adjusted the CO and idle, and the car purrs. For interest, I am using a FPR from a 88+ and it works great (just fabricated a different hose for the FPR outlet back to the fuel tank).
These chips really smooth out the idle, easier starting, and pulls better (seat of the pants - plus speedo) than the previous versions I have had installed.

Thanks for all your effort - want to let you know it is much appreciated

Glenn

Glenn,

Thanks! I considered V3.4 to be 'perfect'...until I messed with the TorqueRings, which give that extra bit of 'perfection'.

Stan is going to be installing the chips and replacing a bunch of other parts soon. I can't wait!

Stan will have your car working GREAT. With Ken's work on the chips it really makes the car a whole different animal.

Installed the torque rings and chips today, and haven't had time to do anything other than verify it still starts up (meaning I didn't mess up!). Without the Wotpot or wotnot or... whatever else, I'm supposed to connect the brown wires on the LH together, correct?

Also... I'm getting a high pitched whistle - super high pitched, almost like being in a room with a TV that's on with no volume. I'm suspecting maybe one of my rubber boots is leaking, but thought I'd ask if anyone else noticed this.

whistle = rubber boot leaking,
loosen the clamps some maybe you overtightened one ,
remove both plenums till you find the leak it will be obvious

Ken, I am some plug wires and distributor caps away from finally ordering your chips, etc. Definitely by SF11. The car runs really well and any hesitation I was having around 3k is gone.

So, I have a few questions for my MY85 5Speed.

Assuming my MAF is in good shape and post intake refresh, if I order the chipset, the torque rings and install the 87 FPR, will I be able to get appreciable gains, smoother throttle response without the wotpot, wotnot and the other shift thing? Or would it be better to save up until I can get all of it and get some assistance in tuning? Please know that I am very naive regarding anything related to tuning and am weak with a multimeter. Installing any of it looks very straightforward thanks to Mrmerlin's write up and your how-to's. Thanks.

Ken's the authority, but I'll say this - I have the chips, but no wot-pot, wot-not, etc, and the difference is drastic over stock.

Thanks Richter. This is what I was hoping to hear. Some of Porken's gizmos go over my head.

I was a little dubious too, but figured at the price, any gain is good. It was definitely noticeable.

edit: sorry, thought I'd add more. Most chips that you'd expect in the price range give you pretty limited results, but I think what makes a lot of difference for these is that it's not just minor adjustments, but also that it's being tuned for a 55psi fuel pressure regulator, which is something like 20psi over stock, which is substantial. With the 4.7L Euro cars getting more HP than our later 5.0 cars from the factory, it's pretty clear to me that they left something on the table, for whatever reason. With Porken's chips and a few minor modifications, the 85 and 86 5.0's are pretty much second in power only to the GTS's 5.7L, and for a fraction of the price.

Yeah, my only limited experience chipping anything was an authority chip for my NA 944. It took me a week to pull it back out as it did was made my car run rich. Given Ken's rep and that of the chips, I am less concerned about the potential of the chips, but more concerned about my abilities to tune them for the desired results. Sounds like I can see good results with dropping them in. Thanks.
