I'm not sure they could do it given all the new regulations re pedestrian impact etc. I think that is why all the cars these days seems big and bloated.
The one and only 928 was designed during an era when engineers ran the company. The downside is they were not making any money.
Now with "bean counters" running the show, the likes of the 928 will never be seen again by a mass production automobile company. At least not for "regular" production, they will reserve such uniqueness for halo cars like the 918.
agreed a panamera-based "new" 928 wont ever happen.
the carrera has encroached into the GT space so completely, a 2 door panamera, with obvious drivetrains would just cannibalize carrera sales.
the only way i could see a new 928 in our future, would be an extremely high end, (F12/DB11 competing) grand sport coupe that shared some tech bits with the 918.

The 928 S4 shared some bits with the 959 so it is possible...
Whoa, guys. The Panamera is the 4-door 928 concept car that has been planned since at least before 1975. Of course the 2-door Panamera coupe will be the reincarnated 928 coupe. The Panamera has always been the modern 928.
At least the 989 was never made. Ugh.
1987 928S4 4-door i.e. Primitive Panamera or Nostradamus' Panamera

Nope....
What was the 928 based on? Nothing? That's the point you are missing. What makes the 928 so special is the "clean sheet" no compromise design. The first road car designed form scratch by Porsche.
A hacked up Panamera coupe is hardly the same thing.

No it isn't.
A 4-door sedan is not the modern day GT the 928 was.
What would be the business case for a 2-Door Panamera?
They are currently selling about 6-7000 of the 4-door Panameras in the US per year. How many 2-door versions could they sell, and how would that affect sales of other Porsche models in the same price range?
I'm not sure, I see the point of having another option between the Carrera and the turbo, price-wise. And I remember an interview with Porsche leaders where they said they'd rather put the money into the Mission E.

Where are you taking this information from?
My contacts at AMG have confirmed that they have NEVER EVER touched a 928 - Except one of one of their employees, who may have brought his own 928 inside their facilities at some point.
As far as I know, these 4-door 928s - two of them - were built BY ASC (American Sunroof Corporation). One is owned by Porsche, and is rotated in and out of the Museum, and another one - with a different back - was last seen in the US.
Don't blindly believe all the stuff that's out there on the Interwebs. Lots of made-up information that has no base in reality.
I don't think the Panamera 2 door is a new 928 or will be made with a Porsche badge. It will be built as a Bentley and probably called a Speed 6/EXP...
Google is your friend for pictures.. It looks like a marriage of a Continental and a DB9..

I think that you are right.
Two cars produced by ASC in collaboration with Porsche, a US (was owned by Heinz Prechter) and a Euro (still belonging to the Porsche Museum), both the same exterior color and certainly based on 1987 S4's.
The US has a Burgundy interior.
The Euro (project code H50) has a black interior.
