Good thing Jen is such a patient gal! It will be gorgeous when she is complete with the stroker! As for the value with a non # match, anyone that knows Gregs strokers wouldn't think twice about buying it and who cares, your not gonna sell it after all this anyway.

Just thinking....didn't we just do this kind of thing for another unfortunate 928er?? Maybe Mark A has a GTS engine in stock that he can donate and we can all show up to help install.......Nah! Never happen. :-)

Rob: Sorry to hear about this. You did say in the OP that you had a stroker for it. You may have jinxed it. She knew.

I would really like to know what caused the oil pressure to drop. I also wonder why the PO burned oil and on this trip you didn't seem to.

Having seen Gregg's comment about always checking the filter, I think I'll be looking for that can opener to open filters with.

I can't get that new Porken clamp on fast enough.

Steve-

Y'know, if it were just me I wouldn't put it past myself to have incorrectly read the oil level on the dipstick, but I watched Jim Morton read it (and smell it) 602 miles into the trip and the level had not dropped measurably at all.

I will definitely open the oil filter on the teardown, just to see how bad it is.

Rob:

Just curious, but how many cans of Lubro Moly went into the car and over what period ?

I'm curious as, if the engine does have Mobil1 oil and thinking about how the oil smelled, I wonder if the additive was getting past the oil control rings and that was the strong smell to the oil. I guess we'll learn more as part of the teardown.

Damn, this is such a bad stroke !

I think using 4 consecutive cans of the ventil sauber fuel additive may prove to be directly related.

That stuff will wash the oil off the cylinder walls when used that vigorously.

Actually, it was 3 cans- 1 in about 15.4 gallons in Salem OR, 1 in 14.8 gallons in Yreka, CA (mileage 99763), and 1 in 19.1 gallons in Westley, CA (mileage 100116). The engine let go about 220 miles later.

I will LMAO if I blew up the motor with fuel injector cleaner. That would be pretty F'ing stupid, even for me...

This stuff is actually pretty easy to figure out. If the oil filter has rod bearing material in it...you bought a GTS at the very end of its life span. The rod got hard to turn on the crank and finally broke. Standard rod failure bearing mode. Apparently this car had seen some track time....according to Rob. This is my guess.

It is possible that the rod simply failed, but if it did, there will be no debris in the oil filter....the engines do not run long enough after the rod fails for any debris to get to the filter.

Those small cans of Ventil Sauber in the fuel tank will not hurt anything, especially anything to do with a connecting rod. I've had customers run them in every tank of fuel, for years.

H-

I last checked it about 100 miles before it blew up (don't remember the name of the last place I stopped) and it was still at the upper mark. In Portland it started off above the upper mark so it consumed some over 900 miles but I added none (didn't want to overfill and cause a lot of windage), and so there was at least 8.5-9 quarts in it 100 miles before it lunched. (I'm guessing at 8.5-9- How much oil is in it when the level is at the upper notch on the dipstick?)

I thought I was the only crazy that smelled dip sticks (trans and engine oil) There are particular things I find by smelling them. My wife thinks I am crazy. I am, but now I know its not related to the fact that I smell everything.

Well... after all the well intended speculation we should know the happenin's after well performed teardown.

Again, best wishes for the results of the forensics and an outcome for a rebuildable set of "rare" parts.
