This might have been part of your problem. IIRC your supposed to use on can heat it up and let it sit. I was told never to use more than one can per oil change.

Otherwise it is still a beauty and will be better than new when your done, new paint, rebuilt engine should be a blast to drive.

Wow. That sucks Rob. Condolences.

I am (as we, I think, all are) interested in the diagnosis of the failure mode.

As far as the original engine goes... A GTS with a rebuilt original engine will, possibly, be worth more than a GTS with a non-original motor. Of course, depending upon the nature of the damage the math may change a lot.

Rob, that car looks gorgeous, and I appreciate your sanguine outlook on it. After all, before it blew up you got to take it for a very nice, very pretty long drive at what sounds like some extralegal speeds.

Plus, it just so happens that you had two motors and one car, one of which motors was going to be a monster suitable for a GTS.

Plus, now you have to pull a motor, a skill you have recent experience with.

Plus, you would be lost if you bought a car and it didn't need a lot of TLC. You'd be spending your days trying to think of things to do. Now, you've got plenty on your plate.

Enjoy, and I envy you for that beauty.

Matt

Man o Man. If you are still alive today, Tuesday, and you wife is IN town, it seems as though you have as understanding a partner as I do.

Think of it as an opportunity. Think of it as only having lost the shortblock. The heads are probably okay.

Beautiful car - sometimes things just work out in an interesting way.

Jen did allow that she was beginning to wonder about my judgement. She said something to the effect that until now she had implicitly trusted my judgement about cars but now she wasn't so sure.... Might be time to lay low for a bit.

Anthony- The ventil sauber I was using was the fuel injector cleaner, added to the gas, not the oil. As it was said to be burning oil I was worried about the thing passing smog, so I started with ~5 oz of cleaner per 20 gallons of gas- can't imagine that would have done any harm. Hey, look at the bright side, now I don't have to worry about it passing smog!

Rob, I would have bought it just like you did- No ppi - no inspection- Just pay and go- Although i would hvae had it shipped. If i were closer i might have gotten the itch for a ride. Maybe you should keep your luck to love and not cars. As my father would say - "in five years- you'll be laughing about it.

What about a chevy ls1 motor- -- here comes the spanking!

Best wishes for your happiness with the car and I bet sooner the beter.

Initially I was thinking of the product you suck in through the intake. Although when i sold my 914 to the new owner she added a can to her tank which was only 1/4 full. it diluted the fuel and caused it to misfire and vibrate. She called me up and I told her to fill the tank with premium and the problem went away.

Doesn't matter now. you will have it up and running and it is still a beautiful GTS in one of the best color combos with clean fresh paint. At $22k you will be fine and have a great car the way you want it.

Keep your chin up and keep us posted.

Rob - That's a gorgeous GTS! Great color combo, no rub strips, fabulous paint, etc. Focus on the positives and don't look back. For $22K, I wouldn't have done anything different than what you did.

Regarding the knock sensor faults - correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that non-functioning knock sensors result in timing being retarded to protect against detonation. Unless it was really sucking the oil, I would think the default mode timing would be sufficient to prevent harm.

This is going to be one very cool GTS when you get done with it! I for one cannot wait to see the finished product. As we discussed the other day, you've got a great starting point and with that high $ paint job, that beautiful interior with some stereo upgrades already done, you're still miles ahead in this deal. This is the perfect car for that stroker motor! Best of luck and thanks for saving this GTS.

Brian those GTS engines with the 100mi/quart will detonate and badly, I agree with that theory or even hydrolock.
