Call me crazy, but that E1 and A1 means something on that tool, which matches what I remember is on the cams. A and E, IIRC. So in that case, you may have reversed the tool? A would be intake and exhaust would be E.

I used that tool on my '85. It worked fine.

+1 on making sure you have the cams on the correct side of the engine. Don't check the markings on the end...check the raised numbers on the shaft.

"E" is for intake
"A" is for exhaust

rotate the cams a little until the too get seated on both cams. right now, it looks like you need to rotate the exhaust cam CCW to make the intake cam fit the tool. if that doesnt work, you are off a tooth.
the next best thing to do is get the 113mm between the marks.

let us know what you find.

Brendan,
The way I understand it (and according to my telephone conversation with DR ) we need both sets of tools #9226 & #9248 for proper uninstall and install on the 87' S4. (someone please correct me if I am wrong)

I have been waiting on tool # 9226 which has the alignment tools you see in the above pic's. I should get them by next Tuesday. When are you needing these? I could loan these to you as I will not be needing the alignment tools for several weeks. (#9226 is a little pricey @ 276.25)

Since they are the same per Dave, then I would love to borrow them. But it would only be needed, probably AFTER you used them.
