Well since someone else said it... I'm with you. I have driven a GTS and it seemed a lot like a ...928, cept my GT's feel quicker.
IMO they are overpriced. I'd buy a new Cayman if I was going to spend 60K, or a mint GT, or 5 speed S4 and have lots moola left over.

I have seen a couple low mile S4's in mint condition for sale in the last couple years that would be just as nice to own and leave your pocket a lot fuller. If a little power difference is the problem give DR a call.

No disrespect intended toward either you or Jim but, living with a GTS as opposed to just driving one or just looking at one and saying you do not feel or see the difference is something I just can't say is credible. I have owned an 89 GT and two 89 S4s, one automatic and one 5-speed. While there may be little difference in SOP feel with regard to how quick each feels the one thing I can tell you because I have lived with both is, you do feel more low end grunt in a GTS. As for the looks, I feel (again because I have lived with both) there is a HUGE difference. Once you get used to looking at the rear end of a GTS, an S4 or GT looks skinny while the GTS looks low and wide. I'm not saying one is better than the other, I love them both and desperately want another 89 GT! To me there is a huge difference, the GTS is the epitome of 928 ownership and I would recommend it for everyone.

Can't argue with your impression of your cars but i feel that the 2 things lacking lookswise (new word) on non-gts 928's are aero mirrors and painted wing and all 928's - wide rubber.

Wide tires have a major effect on "aggressive stance" and perception of width.

I am not trying to change the subject, but I think the best deals out there are nice S4s. The GTSs command a $ premium that I am not willing to pay. Pretty soon the GTS cars will need all of the same maintenance that S4s need now, some being age related. And lower milage cars that have sat a lot have their own lack-of-use issues as well.
I like all the years and all the colors too. They are all special and great.

Yes, I did mean MO.

Thanks for the heads up on Kim, I'll be careful. I noticed the same thing earlier this year, that most of the ads on that site are very old. I also didn't get any email response from numerous attempts off the site.

What I'm looking for in my 928 is refinement, structural integrity, clean, as close to new as possible, etc... Notice I didn't say anything about power or higher performance. I think a GTS is going to get me closer to what I want simply because it's newer.

I drove a GTS earlier this year for about an hour, and it was noticeably better than my S4 in many ways, but mostly just felt new and clean. I didn't buy it because I was sure it had paint work and the seller was not being forthwright about the work. I told him I didn't mind that it had some new paint, it was very nicely done, and the car was just beautiful, but I wanted to know the history before I put down $55K, and he wouldn't help me, he argued with me.

I guess I am willing to pay the premium for a GTS.

I like the look of the GTS', some colors show off the lines of the car better than others. I spent quite a bit of time looking over the rear end of 2 white one's in Tahoe and then SF '05 during the fun drives . As for the power difference... neither one of them left my S4 behind when it came time to ditch rolling chicanes They may have more torque and horsepower, but it must have the greatest effect in the serious triple digit speed zones. I had no trouble staying with either of 'em...

Chuck - will you just hold it down please - let the folks who don't care for a GTS just stay that way will you please...

If you go around encouraging them to actually drive one they'll all be wanting one (or maybe even more than one) and then those of us already looking for numbers 2 &3 will have more folks to compete with....

So - Just knock it off Right!... Its obvious the GTS's are all way too expensive, much too fat in the ***, ugly mirrors and don't perform any better than a '78 - there! The manuals are the worst of the bunch too - just no end of trouble!

Steer clear, don't bid - don't even look!

I doubt the Deys were going flat out, and I'm almost positive Keith wasn't -- his tires probably had single-digit miles on them, and needed the skin burned off. Maybe he should have laid down a lil' patch just to make sure he had good rubber for the drive...

The other side of the coin...
I think of the GTS as a responsibility, while the S4 is a toy. If I could only own one, I would choose the S4. I can supercharge it, put vaccuum formed, phony headlights on lt, decorate the interior with Jaeger panels, handling kits, custom wheels, etc., etc. You get the idea. Lotsa fun.
The GTS is very different. With only 300 examples (USA) to ever exist, I think a GTS comes with an inate responsibility to preserve the examples that are left. When I had the GTS windows tinted, I thought I saw Dr. F looking down on me, shaking his head. Window tinting can come off !
If you think it's just me, then why are there so many super low mileage GTS garage queens always popping up. A super low mileage S4 is a comparitive rarity. Not just because of age, but also because of attitude. S4's/GT's get driven. GTS' get cared for. Just my observation.
Don't get me wrong, I love the GTS. Just looking at it makes me smile. With all the low end torque, it pulls like a freight train. I enjoy it for what it is, but I've always been a little partial to blue collar things, and the S4/GT is the blue collar version.
BTW, my 87 S4-5M feels almost as fast, ..............before the SC !

Porsche always makes the last edition of a model line a bit special and rare. These cars command a higher price in the market due to their spec. and rarity. Bragging rights are included, and the specifications are unassailable. It will always be the ultimate stock 928, and could be the ultimate garage queen for some. The only downside of the later models that I can see is weight, IMO. Many find this a fair trade for the power and refinement.

NP. He made me mad as hell the day he called about my car. Problem was, he had the wrong price in his ad and I sold it for nearly what he had published and I wouldn't sell it to him for less so he could make any money!

Keep your eyes peeled, as has been stated many times on this forum, you'll have the opportunity to buy the same cars Kim and others resell and pay for them what they would pay. Granted, they sometimes find cars that are never advertised but for the most part, autotrader.com, ebay and cars.com will have the majority of cars that show up for sale.

I love both of my GTSs and I have no doubt based on your comments above you will be completely satisfied with a GTS. Good luck in your search.

That is Dr. Sastrie's car. Original owner, good colors and LOW miles..... You'll find it here:

Some very good points/observations. One correction on the numbers, there are actually ~422 GTSs imported to North America. I am in the process of documenting all of them here: 928 Registry

Sure GTS's cost alot more than an S4 for a slight performance gain.....but they are far more rare, which drives up the prices! GTS values are likely to at least remain flat or increase...vs flat at best for S4's....Sure I would like a GTS, but is it worth 3-4 times what I paid for my S4? That is up to you! Look at it this way....GTS's seem to be selling around 40-60% of their MSRP at 10-12 years old....S4's were not worth that much at 10-12 years old! Most S4's are around 10-20% of MSRP now!

When I have the means to get another 928... a GTS will be on the list, but a really clean S4 or GT 5 speed would work too and be far cheaper!

Different things for different people .... to me, a GTS is an S4 with some gorgeous rear fenders. Aside from price, the thing that has steered me away from GTS most, is the oiling problem.

From dyno results I think you get refinement... and a nice looking ***
