Default 928 rally car build in Belgium

i have here different threads about my car , even from 10 years ago , so i start a new one as the build now.
Short story : in 2008 i made a clone of Carl Fausset's car with a lot of his parts… almost everything available. Race engine would be build by know Belgian Porsche shop "Havic Racing" , Rob(ert) van Kol... after 20K payed in the build and engine as good as finished, he went broke and disappeared with it in the night …. You understand my courage was low to continue and i started rallying a historic BMW CS ... Now we are +10 years later....and the itch is there to do again something with the 928.

I have a "sound" engine 16V from '86 and will try to tune it with my IDA48's as in the past before Havik Racing would go ITB's and injection…. big dreams.

This evening i pulled the car for the first time after +10 years on that same lift to inspect and start wrenching…. and i'm amazed there's almost no rust ! even being 5 years outside on earth/grass under a car cover. In that case they are better than BMW's… haha.

Again amazed by the size of the wheels… was a copy of Carl's car and so idem CCW wheels …. but i do have 9",11" and 13" … so can switch for smaller rain/mud tires...9/11 rain/mud or the dry 11/13 setup.
Goal is "gentleman" rally driving , not for the result , but for the fun…. and spectators, as most R5 cars ( Skoda, Ford, Hyundai) are nowadays so uniform, so boring equal 4WD , but damned fast

What happened to your motor when van Kol went broke? Seems like it should have come back to you in whatever state it was in. Laws may be different, of course, but I cannot imagine he took it with him when he disappeared in the middle of the night.

My S4 has been in Hawaii its whole life, and never stored indoors. No rust at all. Pretty amazing that way.

o yes, Karl, he stole "my" engine …. i suspect he sold it in his last business days to have some pocket money.... don't know. Yes, i got a invitation from the official curator to visit the shop … no surprize, all what had any value was of course gone. And he played it smart : in the days before bankrupt he "sold" his business to a Dutch friend , himself disappeared, and all customers/officials had to deal with somebody who didn't know a single thing about that shop ! ( he was a Dutch guy) . I knew he was divorced in the year before…..was the beginning.

Barry, I am very sorry to hear how he deceived you.

Ok, i don't have that engine , but also pitty ,the parts i'm missing now ,that got lost in his shop.... and must buy again… 100 € here, 100 € there...
Lucky i had my car at home ! i took it home one day on my trailer to fabricate in the meantime a dry sump tank... i'm missing front sway bar , rear half custom build exhaust , ITG air filters , a AFR sensor etc... wish i had it all taken home

today i test fitted a bigger brake set in front... was lucky to still have those new parts …. on the car was diameter 300 mm , those are 320 mm. Brake pads are the same length but of course 10 mm higher.
Are those called the " Turbo " brakes ?

working on the engine build i got pitty for my spare engine laying around in the shed…. so i got it inside and demounted all oem stuff which i will never use . Also filled it up with ATF/diesel to let it soak.
This spare one is a M28/12 with the 187.03 and 188.03 cam shafts.
My build is a M28/22 with the 211.00 and 212.00 cam shafts.

That "spare" engine i demounted ( 10 years ago ) myself and was good running , so worth saving.

haha, it has been here all BMW for years…. now it looks like a Porsche shop...

waiting for my new race engine build, i mounted the M28/22 engine in my spare car to have a "mule" years ago but never finished that car …. and no more intention to do so. So i got it again out in 2017 . Didn't had the courage to pull the car on my lift , so i did it in front of the garage... took me half a day included many coffee breaks . I did many brands , but can admit a Porsche 928 is one of the most easy cars to pull a engine. ( and installing one ) My spare engine now M28/12 is the old one from this race car , only used a few races after the owner crashed his ( yellow) car.
Wrenching fun !
.

Ake, according my ex-race shop there are "windage" trays in the sump , but it's not lowered. Don't know if it is the same , purpose in the first place was not loosing oil pressure in fast corners.
Today , among other jobs, i removed all emergency brake parts …. i will install a hydraulic hand-brake , not lockable , as demanded for rally cars.

Pic of the 928 + dust coming out of storage to my home a few years ago ...

the GT3RS wing was a bit "overkill" to my feeling … maybe OK for track use but sure not really needed for rally . So i cut away in the middle 30 cm to make a 110 cm instead of 140 mm wing. Also doing this , the supports come in line with the alu plate in the rear , so i can fabricate the "Porsche" alike supports ( vertical alu plates ) . I will finish the center "cut "line , make the supports and see if i use this wing. Looks are now more "ok" and in line with the car 's roof. Nowadays all modern R5 rally cars have wings….

first dissolution is to have no options in ring&pinion…. didn't thought of that early because in our "BMW's" it is so obvious to have choice…. indeed, the pinion gear is one part with the axle going all the way through the gearbox… and neither Porsche or aftermarket build higher diff gears. O yes, perhaps some exceptions i see from years ago , but way to expensive… ???

My G28/12 has a 2.63 ratio... ( i think ) …. but i would prefer a 3.5....

This means i have 3 gears to rally , and perhaps 4the in some rare long straights….. just hope i can shift it easy in 1sth in "slow" corners.... were we are used to do it in second gear. ( don't know if it helps, but i use the single plate clutch )

Barry, here is something about 3.09 ring and pinion.
