Default 3.09 ring & pinion

Hi All,
I have been IM'D about the source for the 3.09 rear axle ratio. Rather than send multiple messages I'll just post it. I haven't talked to him for a few years, but here's the info:
Houseman Automotive
6564 Decker Dr.
Lambeth, Ontario
NOL 1S6 Canada
phone: 519-652-3030

Hope that helps, Hammer

Since I live in Ontrario, I did a reverse lookup to see where this place is. The phone number is still the same and it's located ~10 west of London, Ontario, Canada.......about 1 hour 10 min. West of me and ~2 hours east of the Ambasador Bridge US Border (Detroit, Mi).

Here is the info from 411.ca:

Houseman Auto Centre
Route 3rd
Lambeth, ON N0L 1S0

AFAIK, all the 3.09s for the 928 came from that source. One batch. IIRC Kim Crumb lead/organized the deal.

And - hope kibort doesn't see this or we'll be treated to another ... ahem... discussion on gearing.

I usually don't travel that way too often, but if needed I can go and see them.

Anyone knows any background on the last batch they made? For example, did the deal go smoothly, are they willing to do it again or was this a nightmare and they don't want a repeat.

I can find out the hard way and see a big sign with "No 928 allowed" in their parking lot!

You could just call them instead of driving all the way over there. It's a more local call for you, and you speak Canadian...

IMHO, it sounds like Mark knows what he is talking about and has given the gearing issue great thought for his racing application.
However, wouldn't the optimum FDR change, to maximize 1/8 mile straight line acceleration (from a slow roll or a standing start) ?
I remember 4.88, 5.13, and greater FDR' s back in the (Chevy) day, for 1/8 mile drags. Given the increased power currently made available to us by boosted applications (350-550 HP or more), and the availability of "stickier" tires etc., what would the optimum FDR be?

For boost the 2.2 is best.

I agree. Every time you shift you loose about a tenth or so in the 1/4 mile. I used to go through the finish line 200rpms into the red in 3rd. Since the SC I have to shift into 4th. I've tried keeping it in 3rd, but the engine start to hit the rev limited ~50ft before the finish line. I still have the chip set in it so the rev limiter is a bit higher than stock and even this is not enough to keep me in 3rd. With the 2.20 and a SC, the gears seem short as it is. Increasing the ratio would do nothing more than constant shifting and making the 1st useless.

Ideally you want to be in top gear at red line when crossing the finish, but that’s for hard core drag cars, not for us armatures.

the overall gear ratio needs to be considered more than the final drive. the stock 2.20 is not geared that much taller than the 2.70's (on the early cars) in 1st-4th. in my 84 2.72 it feals too short. in an otherwise stock tranny, if you changed the 2.20 to a 3.09, imho it's gonna be way too short.
