Rixter will be posting this internationally as well. If you're interested let me know. If you're not, no additional gear ratio lectures will be necessary, to whom that may concern. I've done this at my expense as a service to the List with the assistance of The Rixter, not to make a profit. Price may go down if there is interest in more than ten sets. Again, this is for the 4 speed auto trans.
Regards, Hammer

Whatever happened with this? The 928 got screwed with this low rear-end ratio. The 968s and Turbo 944s have rear ends in the high 3's. I don't care about top speed, I want responsiveness.
Where can 928 owners find higher rear end ratios?

I would love to have one for an auto! But I don't have a running auto to put it into.
I do have a 5sp with ratios very close to 3.09 in gears 1-4, and 5th gear being 2.73.

Funny story about Kim and the 3.09. he said he loved it on the GTS. why is it funny?? becuase the only gear that changes is 1st gear to a 12.6:1 vs 8.9:1 and the rest of the gears are near identical. actually after this Super Low 1st gear you would get with a 3.09 on a GTS 2.73 type gear box, the gears turn out to be ratios almost identical to a stock S4 from 1st to 4th gear.
so for somone to actuallly like the GTS gear box with a 3.09, they better be doing 1/4 mile drags with slicks, or racing someone to 39mph. (normal 1st gear is to 55mph) then, the stock S4 has a 2nd of 80mph, 3rd of 115mph and 4th of 150mph. this is almost identical to the Zo6 corvette and Viper .
their 6th speeds only get them to our overdrive gears. both 5th and 6th on the viper and ZO6 are taller than 150mph at redline.
so the net net. a "sub first gear" only buys you some big jump out of the hole in a drag. Id be willing to be that there would be uncontrollable wheels spin with street tires anyway. AND after that, the gears are actually at a disadvantage for speed ranges from 35mph to 115mph. (but it depends what those target speed ranges are anyway)
remember, acceleration = power/mass x velocity. Gear box changes only optimize the time you spend at near max hp over an operating speed range.
they dont "create" hp.
If Kim Crumb felt a difference on the track, it was percieved. no track in the world, without using standing starts, can use 1st gear on a GTS, let alone making it even lower. (and all the other gears become S4 ratios)

do the math with the ratios. The rear end numerical value has no value until you match it with your actual transmission ratios. In other words, the 928 and 944 along with 6 speed Vets and Vipers of today, all have near the same spacing and numerical ratios.
The bmws i race have the exact same spacing as i have with my S4. they have a 1st gear equivilant to the 3.09 on a GTS, but guess what, they never use it and only use 3rd (and rarely 2nd) , 4th and 5th , which happpen to have the same speed at max rpm as my S4 of 55mph in 1st, 80mph in 2nd and 115mph in 3rd with 155 being their top speed in 5th, AND my top speed in 4th. However, i get to drive to the track at 80mph in my 5th at 2400rpm!
So, forget about ratios. look at what speed you will hit redline in in each gear and what your desired application (range of speeds) will be.
