I hit the rev limit at 6500 rpm's in the 951 Cup which is about 285 km/h, 3 km/h faster than I managed to get my 928GT up to. And it get there a lot quicker as well with almost the same power but only 2/3 of the weight. I miss "jet-fighter" feeling of the 928 though. The Cup car is pretty raw.

well I had gone past the 270 kmph mark a few times, and counting the revs I would have hit 280 on multiple occassions, and once closer to the 300kmph mark, and I wasnt running out of road, but decided to calm it down as I saw some traffic way ahead and decided that as I was doing 3x there speed I would slow it down early or I would catch up quick

Since this thread got revived, I can post this years top speed:
169 mph radar speed on Nevada highway 225. Later that weekend
I hit an "unofficial" 176 mph on the gps. I average 160 mph for
the first 25 miles of the northbound leg (from a standing start).
The average dropped to 155.116 when I reached the end of the
45 mile run (I was targeting a 155 avg). The avg dropped to 154.764
on the return leg (against a 10-15 mph headwind).

Jesus jorj7, you were haulin! I wonder how that would compare to average laps at LeMans?

Let's just say that I've been about 40 mph slower than you...- Ruf

Anybody know what kind of signal is sent to the speedo on an 81 928? Or any of the other gauges? I'd like to look into non-porsche gauges, not sure what it would take to make any of them work.

Just a few miles from my house there is a long wide straight stretch two-lane ( aptly- Looney Lane)
that joins up with a newly upgraded state highway on a curve. Because of the curve, they deemed exiting left on to Looney dangerous and have built a barrier to prevent . Ergo- there is never any oncoming traffic on this approx. two mile stretch of great road.
Given that my car is such a pile, US spec motor sitting under the CIS that came in it, I was surprised to see 141 mph come up on the GPS. It still had a bit more to give but I let off to assure plenty of shut down space. My discs are pretty ugly but they acquitted themselves well enough that I trust them for normal driving.

Well I have to join this thread.....haven't had my shark for too long, but did manage a postively easy 140 the other day(at dusk with the headlights up)....way too easy, didn't take long either...cruising 110.....floor it....downshift...BWAAAHH & your gone...I have never felt a car accelerate that hard at that high of a speed!!! It was cool seeing the windshield wipers float at about 130....had to back off at 140...but the car felt like it could have pulled and easy 160+

Yeah Nicole!
Frei Fahrt fuer freie Buerger :-)
Got my shark up on the Autobahn north of Hamburg up to 280 km/h on the digital speedo. For all you non-metric guys this is about 174 mph. But the best part is that it would have gone faster but there was traffic

168 digital readout and verified by stopwatch at Battle Mtn., NV during Pony Express practice sessions. We were in the 150 mph class, and because the race ended up being cancelled after the first leg, we only got our average up to about 148.5. You have to spend quite some time up in the 160's to get your average up there...just ask George!

The fastest that I've driven mine?...
about 160 at Charlotte several years ago. The race team I was working for had the track for testing, and I managed to get permission to do a few laps.

on the street/highway - about 90 mph...

The fastest that I've ever driven?
about 210+ at Daytona in a GTP car...

For the people that do this on the highway, permit me to share a story:
at the Sebring 12 HR race, (I think 1979) I was behind a Ferrrari Daytona, going up the back straight. We were doing about 180 when he hit a dog......
I thought the car exploded - there were LARGE Ferrari parts everywhere, and I was VERY busy doing a high speed slalom trying to miss most of it.....while the Ferrari was doing spins and then tumbles.....
The Ferrari was totaled, the driver was more shocked than injured.......
and that was in a "controlled environment".....

on the other hand, highways seem to attract deer, dogs, raccoons, etc, etc.....
