Well, this wasn't in my shark...but I did the Richard Petty thing at Michigan International Speedway. My last lap average was 152mph and hit 170 on the straights....now that was a rush (considering I'm not a real Nascar fan...sorry Nascar fans). But driving those beasts is an amazing amount of work and an even more amazing rush.

Passed a semi doing 135 and it still had more to go. Since it was dark outside and almost deer season I didn't want to push my luck. Even if I saw a deer it would have been all over (literally).

Have a good night's sleep. When Montana erased their speed limits, the accident immediately went down; when they reinstated them, it went back up. Nightey, nite. Not too comforting unless

The path of least resistance is certainly not what the original colonists took to break free from British tyranny. But we are all experiencing another form of tyranny and can either resist or be bled dry. There are laws that allow us to escape this tyranny. We simply must resolve to use them effectively.
And to unite in this effort if we are to reverse what Normy once called
a de-evolutionary path.
LOOK AROUND YOU. You know that Smokey, in his cruiser, works his way through heavy traffic at 75 to 85 mph at least or he would be stuck like the rest and unable to survey a broader sample of drivers. And he will look you straight in the eye and tell you that it is unsafe to drive above 70 mph
(75 in Arizona and some parts of California). You believe that fairy tale??
He does it all day long and more. I like to do about 80 or so on the open highways in Florida.
[Exception: I-4 in Orlando. If faced with the unfortunate situation of having to drive on this overloaded stretch of road....I'd typically be happy with 25~]
Really though, on the open sections of the highways in this state, you can do about 80 without much worry regarding cops. Funny thing: These days, the German cars sold in the US are essentially the same as those sold in Europe. And another funny thing: typical speeds on the German Autobahn, or most roads in Europe are approximately the same. In Belgium, most people keep it below about 140 km/h, which works out to about 84 mph.
I once drove my VR6 powered Corrado 130 mph; I matched that once in my 928 on a lonely stretch of I-275 in Michigan, racing one of the new Mercury Marauder's [I won, not that that is anything to brag about....]. Both times scared the hell out of me- Sorry, but I just don't feel comfortable in any street car above about 100 mph. That's enough for me-

Oddly, I agree with just about everyone on this thread. There are times to be safe, and on occasion, times to have some fun. If/when I do exceed the posted speed limit for a brief moment, I make sure it's safe such as: during daylight, little or no traffic, car/tires are in good condition, flat/even road, excellent view of road-sides, etc, etc. I think we all agree, that if one is to "exceed" the speed limit, one should be respectful to the risks involved - not just of oneself but to others. My other golden rule is - expect the unexpected.
I haven't really pushed my 928 on top-end yet. I may someday, but no immediate plans. Although, it is exhilarating to see how much power it has when "taking off" at 80mph and very quickly accelerating up to higher speeds.
My speed record was in a Datsun 280-Z. If you want to know the speed, you'll have to e-mail me. Needless to say, that car becomes very light in weight at high speeds.
A little OT: I remember reading an article (I think it was R&T) several years ago, where the test drivers were road-testing a new Lamborghini for an up-coming magazine article. I don't recall the location, but the drivers were briefly testing it at speed and crested a hill to see 'farmer bob' in his John Deere and were unable to safely maneuver around him. Unfortunately, the Lamb. colided with the tractor and the driver of the Lamb. did not survive.

Hacker ... I deleted the 85mph pos in my 911, and it was really cool to finally be able to see the needle go to 140 where it had previously read a little over 85. Dump that pos and get a real speedo, what they were thinking by disabling your ability to tell your own speed, I really do not know.

Put it to you this way....if you were on a certain stretch of road in Jacksonville, NC at or about 0100 when I was coming home after a night mission, you may have caught a glimpse of a very large black insect screaming by at 120 ish. The goal was to make triple digits on before hitting the brakes to turn in to my residential area (about 3/4 mile). I only overshot a couple times because I was grinning too much and missed the turn.

always seems like the 1 time in years that I decide to "really open it up in the middle of nowhere" results in a ticket...my history of criminal behavior:
1980, Kawi 1000 LTD - 125... those bugs REALLY hurt, worse than a ticket!
1989, 944 - 131, cited for 70...thk god for traffic school...beer, popcorn, watch
the video...yep, I got safer...
2000, 928 - 139, cited for 85 in 75...nice guy, said another P-Car had the record for the day...thk god for traffic school making me safer, again...
2001, PA 28-235 - 212 at 100' agl... thought the wings were going to come off, but it was cool - no tickets in class E/G airspace, but those hills come up fast and the folks on the ground in cars really wig out...
IMO, it does matter when, where, how - so tracks really are best/safest for sure....doesn't mean an open stretch of hwy in death valley or vacent twistie section isn't prime fun zone though
just not for me, I always get caught...(ok, maybe not EVERY single time, but enough to get tired of it)don't think OR has corner on jerk drivers, in CA we have a few too...would be nice if passing lane stuff was enforced, it does get old w/55 in a 70 and when they block the passing lane as if it's their road or like they will enforce a "safe" speed for the 20 cars stuck behind them...it's always fun when they speed up in the passing lane to keep you from passing them too...real nice folks...500 hp might help, but the dirt shoulder routine is a bit much for a new paint job and smooth tires, so I think I'll save that one for "COPS"...
in lovely acton, CA a local "genius" called in CHP to help enforce speed limits on "transient" drivers
a real success - they cleaned out the wallets of the locals (no real transients here) for nearly 4 mos before moving on to "protect" another "dangerous town"... used "0" tolorance laws, so tickets were getting issued for as little as 2mph over to soccer moms, dads and even grandmas. was too funny to hear the complaints.... we're so much safer now 
offroad is fun - 80 seems like 140 on the street...no speedtraps either, but lots of cows/deer etc...

Well Anders if you can reach past 170mph in your 44, then she deserves a bunch of respect. I could not get past 155 in my S4 though I did run out of road, but that is actually a pretty freaking powerful beast. Now, let's see how she does with the supercharger
