That Governor also ran a stop sign, and was driving recklessly.

If you are going to drive at those speeds, you have to be careful, and aware of your surroundings.

The motorcyclist was killed when he hit the Governor's car in the side.
The motorcyclist was not hit. He was the one who hit the governor's SUV.
So it would not have mattered if he ran the stop sign at 50MPH or 100MPH.
The death was caused by the sudden appearance of an obsticle in the path of the motorcycle.

The negligence was in running a stop sign, not speeding.

I would assume that when people are driving fast, they should be aware of the
increased need for attention, and the need to be aware of their surroundings.

For the sake of discussion, we should assume that people who decide to drive their
928 fast, should be aware of what is going on, not just tearing along, yapping on
the cel phone, running stop signs, etc... Doing that stuff *is* unsafe. But I think it
is safe to drive that fast on the open road, with few other cars around you...

And yes, the law does not like it.
That is pretty much the only thing that keeps me from driving fast more often.

Not to sidetrack or jump on the punitive bandwagon, but now that it has been brought up, here's Janklow's record. We are a better group of drivers, so we can do what he can't, I believe. I get real pissed when I know someone who doesn't have a clue, is speeding. Big difference when they know what they're doing. Still, that deer doesn't know any difference.
One more thing- this record is really immaterial, as in court they are only looking at the manslaughter charge. So, I'm guilty of something I know better than to do. Sorry if this offends anyone.

Janklow's driving record:
- Accident, Oct. 6, 2002. Janklow hit a deer near the Spink-Hand County line, though he missed the rest of the group of animals.
- Accident, April 11, 2001. While overseeing the state's response to flooding in Watertown, Janklow was rear-ended by another vehicle that couldn't stop when he slowed down on a county road.
- Accident, April 6, 1997. During earlier flooding in Watertown, Janklow ran into the back of a Highway Patrol semi trailer because the brakes were wet from driving through high water and the road was slippery.
- Speeding, Oct. 30, 1994, 80 mph in 65-mph zone
- Speeding, May 30, 1994, 90 mph in 65-mph zone
- Speeding, April 30, 1994, 75 mph in 55-mph zone
- Accident, Dec. 27, 1993. While traffic on a Sioux Falls street slowed to make way for two police cars with their lights and sirens on, Janklow rear-ended a vehicle. Janklow said he saw an oncoming blue Bronco that appeared to be getting out of the way of the police cars and he was trying to avoid it. The other driver "stated he did not see the blue Bronco," the document said.
- Accident, Nov. 24, 1993. Janklow collided with a Sioux Falls city bus after pulling forward "to avoid being struck by a phantom vehicle."
- Speeding, March 12, 1993, 89 mph in 65-mph zone
- Accident, Jan. 23, 1993. Janklow was hit by a drunk driver in rural Minnehaha County after trying to avoid an animal on the road. Other driver arrested for third-offense drunk driving.
- Accident, July 15, 1992. Janklow ticketed after he hit the back of a car that was turning onto a city street. He said he didn't see the turn signal, but tests indicated it was on.
- Following too close, July 15, 1992 (for accident).
- Speeding, Dec. 16, 1991, 87 mph in 65-mph zone.
- Speeding, Nov. 5, 1991, 47 mph in 30-mph zone.
- Speeding, Oct. 11, 1991, 69 mph in 55-mph zone.
- Speeding, July 15, 1991, 75 mph in 65-mph zone.
- Speeding, Nov. 6, 1990, 79 mph in 65-mph zone.
- Speeding, April 30, 1990, 45 mph in 35-mph zone.
- Speeding, Jan. 13, 1990, 74 mph in 55-mph zone.
- Speeding, Jan. 4, 1990, 78 mph in 65-mph zone.

If you've been to Europe and driven on the Autobahn, Autostrada, Autovia and such, you realize that driving "the way these cars are meant to" requires different highway designs, different levels of maintainence and, above all, a different mentality on the part of the other drivers.

I've done 130+ mph with my whole family in the car. Still getting passed briskly. Doing my part by getting the hell out of the way. And having the left yielded to me by any slower traffic. No one squats in the passing lane. No passive-aggressive types who will yield after blocking you. No jerks who are angry that you had to pass them on the right.

And I never saw high-speed driving on two-lane country roads. Now sport driving the mountain twisties is another thing.

Where the asphalt ends trees be a growin and all but the farmers are haulin a**. There is, physically, not enough room for two cars to be side by side and have all four tires on the road. Madness! And then there's the fog...
Most Brits are alledgedly just as brassy behind the wheel on Scottish and Welsh cart paths. 50mph on any of those roads was nerve racking -to me-.

I will be taking my 1980 auto for a little ride soon. I just want to change those aluminum ball joints before I see how fast it will go. How fast can an 80 go with a stock engine and what is the best way to get a faster top end speed out of the car? The fastest I have been so far was with a BMW 850 i, we did 245km/hr and it was solid. I thought it was a really nice car.

Johnny ...to go faster remove the outside mirrors , lower the front end , tape shut part of the grill and any other openings , run narrow tires fabricate a very low front spoiler that nearly rubs the ground all the time .

Jim,

Thanks for the advice. Is there anything that can be done to the engine for this year of car that will squeek out a few more HP? Also, I know it is a 3 speed but what speeds is this car supposed to shift at? Thanks

I agree with the first paragraph.

There are plenty of passive aggressive guys in Germany who try to teach people a lesson about what they think is reasonable speed on the left lane. Theoretically they can get ticketed, but it rarely happens.

Passing on the right = illegal on the Autobahn. Get caught, and they yank your license on the spot.

Maybe I didn't have enough clear, downhill road to provoke the driving "police." I was still amazed at the road manners.

Default left lane dopes

There are plenty of "passive aggresive" dopes in America who stay in the left lane tripping out to the sounds of air rushing in and out of their heads which are in a fog. Most of them are concentrated in the great state of Washington, and the overflow filtered down to Oregon. Those breed and their offspring find their way to California...the ones who can't even hear the air in their head and are brain dead. They give you a blank stare as you pass by them on the right after wearing out your lights, horn, middle finger, etc., trying to coax them to move over.

But......I must say it seems to be getting better day by day. More often I find drivers in the left lane move right as they see me approaching from the rear. And I don't need to flash for them to do it. They probably can pronounce the name Porsche correctly as well. Wonders may never cease.

A word of caution: there is a new tactic by Smokey wherein he will park his behind in the left lane and cruise along just under the speed limit waiting for you to become angry and whiz past him on the right. He does this in his low profile cruiser (unmarked, but with antennae if you really look). Then he nails you for unsafe lane change, aggressive driving, etc. or because he is jealous or exhausted his Viagra supply, or whatever. Beware.

Actually, there are so many speeders in CA, when they want to collect revenue,
they do not have to be sneaky. They just enter the freeway, go to the left lane,
hit the gas to maximum, which they enjoy doing, and just accelerate at max speed,
up to the first car they encounter. If they are in the left lane, chances are they
are going over the speed limit. So they just light them up, and pull them over.
No real need for "hiding" around here. With so many cars, there is always someone
who is not paying attention...

For reasons unknown to me I some how see a group of speeding drivers as very similar to a ball of bait fish .......... the larger predator fish (shark?) can not possibly eat them all so the ones on the edge , the one who stands out (too flashy) , the unwary is the one to get eaten . They can get just about anyone but not the rest . Packs of cars move like a school of bait fish ..security in numbers .. speed up , slow down together ...police car moves through the school and it creates an opening as the ones in front hold steady (never hit your brake lights) and the cars behind slow down (just in case the speedo is wrong ).......It is like an insurance agent at a crowded party ..... want space around you just mention that you sell life insurance ..............

Hey Ron, I've had to sit behind two drivers on a two lane road for a quarter of an hour. I finally decided to pass on the left, IN THE DIRT, at 70 mph. Dumb, yes.
Then I've lived on Orr Springs Road in Mendocino, where nearly every single person was aware and pulled over for those going faster. That was a very strange place of good manners. I'll never know why, except that it was so beautiful.
