all i can say is, i agree!!

how do you do slalom at 180mph?? Ill I know at Road America, at the end of each straight, i was hitting 152mph 3 times a lap. all I cold think of was the movie where the guy says " Ramming speed " slalom was out of the question
open road racing , crazy!!!!!! Imho
Mk

[LARGE Ferrari parts everywhere, and I was very busy doing a high speed slalom trying to miss most of it.....while the Ferrari was doing spins and then tumbles.....
The Ferrari was totaled, the driver was more shocked than injured.......
and that was in a "controlled environment".....
on the other hand, highways seem to attract deer, dogs, raccoons, etc, etc.....[/QUOTE]

I personally have not seen any deer out in the area where they run the Pony Express. Not really much in the way of large game habitat (trees or water) out there. Pretty much all you see is birds. Not uncommon to see bird splat marks on bumpers, windshields, etc. In the case of small animals, birds, etc., everyone is pretty much instructed to maintain course and speed and to drive right through it. Also realize that the well run events have so many course workers that there is not one section of the course that is "blind" to a worker. Definitely inspires confidence. Your navigator is also an extra set of eyes to (hopefully) alert you of any danger lurking at the side of the road. All this being said, there is definitely not much in the way of a runoff area.

That is my point exactly...

m kabort:
..."how do you do a slalom at 180 mph ??"......

you try and miss the big pieces......and hope for the best.....
(I didn't miss all of them - I had to pit with 2 punctures)

but it did have ALL of my attention there for about 2.7 seconds..........

My 87 S4 does 30.

Why?

Because it feels like it has a rev limiter at about 2000 Rpm

I am working on it.

198 stone stock except K&Ns, chips, and gears.

Speedo is accurate with speed traps and calculators.

6,900 in fifth... redline is 7,000 with chips.

6900 RPM in 5 should give you about 220mph

slightly over 170 in a 928. Did 180 in my 944 Turbo S - but I had a slight downhill grade to help. And both were on just good ol' Utah roads - out in the middle of nowhere. But the real attention grabber was 130 on my Honda ST1100. Don't let my wife read this.

Hmmm, doing the math would give you 188 mph at 6900 rpm in 5th with standard size 245/45/16 rear tires and 2.64 rear gears. 7250 rpm would be required to do 198mph and it's proven that the S4 cams are too mild to give you any more power at higher revs. That's not taking into account the horsepower requirement to push enough air out of the way to do that speed. It is a common idea that with a cd of .30/.32 it takes approx. 400rwhp to go 200mph if all other conditions are perfect. Not that I'm doubting your claim as a friend saw 195mph (GPS verified) on his mostly stock 87' but it did involve a really long (a few miles!) steep downhill run that he hit the top at 140+. His mirrors folded back with force at around 175 mph almost stopping his attempt.

Dave,

He say's he has GTS style wheels (probably 17s), so if the diameter of the tire is 25.4 inches
then he could go 198 at 6900 rpm, but it would take about 468 rwhp on a level surface
and still air to get there.
