Man am I glad I don't normally drive late at night! You guys running hyper legal speeds in the dark scare me. THAT takes *****, especially whoever it was that did it on a bike I prefer to be able to SEE what is coming but, to each his own.

Anyway, sure it is a risk, anytime, anywhere, including the racetrack. I'm not in west Texas but I am very near North Dakota and that style of topography and population density. I make my high speed rips on the same stretch of road, I have two favorites, know them well drive them almost daily. I keep the car in top shape and am picky about where and when I speed. That is my risk management strategy, and it sounds like most guys have thought about the same things.

So yes the risks are there, there are present in most things we do, driving fast is not the exception. We do it to enjoy these awesome machines, exactly why most of us bought them. So, thanks for the advice Jim, respectfully and duly noted.

Be Safe...Have Fun

Recently got nailed by the FHP at 90 in a 55 in my wife's 96 Volvo 855 Turbo...ticket was about $185 + driving school + 3 points on my D.L. which makes a total of 9 points now. Yikes...one more ticket in the next 12mos and I'll be walking or cycling to work. I was not pleased neither was my wife. I thought I was going to be arrested but fortunately was not. In FL, I believe that 30mph over posted speed limit can lead to that outcome if the officer so desires...

"Big House" Heinrich, what happened to you when you were arrested after your 150mph jaunt? Do tell...

Since my 89 s4 is guards red (aka "arrest me red")...I'm not planning to anything ELSE to attract the "boy/girls in blue" to my rear bumper. I wish we had some damned twisties in my part of the state...nothing but straight line roads around here which can be enticing

Word to the wise...do watch out for the deer, moose, elk, and other critters on your late-night high-speed runs. I once saw the remains of an early 80's Z-car at a gas station in northern New Hampshire after it had hit a bull MOOSE at speed at night...what a mess. Moose fur and blood stains everywhere. Said moose came through the front windshield and apparently went out the back of the car through the hatch reportedly killing both passenger and driver in the process. Not a good way to go...

Be SAFE out there...helmets, roll-cages, and racing harnesses will only do so much to protect you and your passengers. God forbid you actually take out pedestrian or make contact with a moving or parked vehicle...with passengers

My record is 264km/h (164.28 mph) on the digital speedo and 270 km/h (168 mph) on the needle at 6000 rpm.
This was done on the Autobahn...

It's easy to do.

Tuk,

I got a ticket on 1-10 east of Tallahassee near the Quincy exit for 117 MPH in a 70 MPH zone. He just asked that I try and slow it down a little and didn't even give me a lecture. I payed something like $300 for that ticket but I went to drving school to get it off my driving record so no points would be issued.

I have hit 152 on the admitidly(sp?) optimistic speedo in my '86 928S. I would estimate the true speed about 142. It was still pulling, but slowly, and common sense told me to back off. This was on a stretch of RT287 going past Oakland in New Jersey. It felt great.

On the same stretch I have hit a true 145 in another car. But, that was in my modified '87 Buick turbo (GN engine). It took less than half the time to get there than the 928 (the Buick runs high 11s at 114+), but I was scared ****less, the car almost flew off the road! The 928 felt fine at that speed, I was just worried about the revenue patrol.

Hey BCDavis, that's one cool pic!

Like your pic too Lizard but aren't you running a bit cold to be pushing it that hard?

I would regularly see 140 on mine, and reached 150 several times, the last was going up hill a few day's before my engine's demise. I would like to have had 100% of my concentration on what was in front of me, but sadly I have to be aware of what's behind too, and I don't have any radar detector either.

Recently two motor cyclists were given 3 or 6 months jail time here in the UK for being caught doing approximately 150.

Top Speeds
928 S4 - 150mph - up hill
Vertically - 150mph approx - skydiving

Cool escaped

Jack:
That scenario actually happened to me in another state (No I won't reveal which one). On occasion I would give my right foot a chance to exercise full extension on the freeway late at night in a 911E. One night a motorcycle cop was behind me as I kept accelerating out of sight. I never knew he was there. I had occasion to meet that fine gentleman at a Porsche Club meeting subsequently, where he spoke about traffic safety. After the talk, he asked for me by name and the group pointed me out. He related the events of that "chase" and chastised me for doing it "in front of him". He cautioned me to never do it again when he was present, but to do it late at night when the roads were empty. Of course, he didn't bother to inform me of his nightly schedule so I could avoid pissing him off.
We became friends as a result of that meeting.

For those who might wonder my very brown 1980 still has the 85 MPH speedometer and no I do not believe I have ever " pegged " it on the street . I have been known to downshift to third at 65-70 and floor it briefly to " change lanes" . Many , many years ago NEW 1969 Fairlane fast back 428 cobra - jet engine about 140 MPH .......... that was way too fast for that tank ! It was a dealership car , my DEMO ....22 years old driving free 428 Mustangs , 429 Boss , Drag pack 428 4 speeds "cobra" , Boss 302 etc. after a few thousand miles we sold them ! about that time I discovered foriegn sports cars and learned that cars were supposed to turn and stop , as well as go fast !
