OD, I see it's been a long cold winter in Boston. I recall much higher numbers than that. Much!!

PM me your itinerary....I'm leaving for Idaho on Thursday.

Here's some more teasing with an LQ4 6.0 truck motor swap into an 3rd Gen Camaro.

Stock 317 Heads milled .020" compression ~ 9.75:1
Crane 228/232 cam .600/.600 matching .650 dual springs
LS1 car intake, throttle body, 28lb injectors
1 5/8 long tube headers, full 3" exhaust with Dynomax ultraflow welded mufflers

Now someone please explain to me if a 951 can put down those numbers with less than $3,000 into the motor.

Thread: Derailed.

I'd love a V8 swapped 944/968 and have been researching for years. I'm much more of a V8 guy than a turbo 4 person, I have four V8s in the fleet right now, not a one of them under 300HP.

That said, to do a V8 IMO you better be willing to start with $20K and some time unless you have fab skills worth twice that and a lot more time.

That's for what I am after, a V8 swap I could take someone out on a date in and not have to explain or make excuses for why the car is kinda ****ty or hard to parallel park or why we have no AC or why our feet get really hot. Or why we can't get pulled over because it's unregistered because passing smog is really challenging.

For a track rat maybe you can save $10K on the build, until you build out the track needs. LSD, rollbar, brakes, big oil cooler, big custom radiator, fire system, etc.

You're sorely forgetting that chicks dig the boost.
To illustrate this theme please take a look at the below graph which shows rate of NA acceleration in red and rate of Turbocharged acceleration in green.
The girl's decision about your car is made at roughly the time the two lines intersect.

sounds like the TopGear "handbrake turn" argument...

Lol, all this time has passed and odurandina is still with 968 fuel pump

IMO LS (and the like) swaps are done mostly by those who cannot make Porsche engine fast enough... If you want to do V8 swap properly, it won't be cheaper than modifying Porsche engine to 500-600+ hp.

but it'll be a helluva lot more reliable.... and run on cheap Walmart M1 0w40 oil with the high zddp.

Joel and Raceboy are right. $20-30k for openers. and that's just getting an pullout engine running with good suspension and brakes.

Alright sorry everyone that I have taken so long to reply to all this, been super busy as of late. But here is my reply, I will try to reply to everyone and use names in this so it'll be a bit long, just look for your user name at the beginning of paragraphs.

Jfrahm: I would love to do something crazy like that someday as well. But as of now time and budget don't allow for that lol. Maybe someday though I will do something similar, I love the 944's anyway.

odonnel: Yeah it's something to take on another day when I have something else to drive (hopefully another Porsche XD), maybe sometime in the next decade, I can only hope though. I believe that supercharging would be harder for sure though since there never was one.

Mongo: I like what you're doing there, interesting stuff for sure! Thanks for sharing and for the good ideas that hopefully I can do someday!

odurandina: Thanks for sharing those pics as well, very nice looking!

In other news, I am completely enjoying my near-zero-maintenance, mint 295HP Cayman S 6MT.

..but now you have nothing to fix or do. Half the fun is getting elbow deep into these cars.

As Lumbergh said, "Uhmmm, yeeeaaahh, I'm going to have to go ahead and...disagree...with you, there."

I'm over it. Just want to drive.

You worry about oil price on a car that has mile/per dollar cost several times worse than a taxi?

Regarding reliability, it always comes down to tuning, and likewise on V8.

Haven't had any reliability issues with my 924 and I have not babied it either, actually quite contrary.
But having Porsche engine running at 500+hp is much more fun factor than running a boring american V8 with ancient tech running like a diesel with anemic top tend.

Wanna race?

How exactly is an American V8 boring? I have ridden, and driven anything from a pro-street BBC Chevelle to a Lingenfelter Corvette C5, and an NHRA nostalgiac pro-stock. I can tell you the only other thing more exciting was hearing the roar of a Lamborghini Diablo VT behind my ears.

No way a 4-banger is going to give me that aural orgasm, let alone the speed.

By the way, your view of an American V8 with no top end is disproven. Please see the latest Ford Coyote Engines, and Chevy Gen IV and V LS engines. Come back and talk after the research and engineering involved in getting a V8 to shriek that is still pushrod, or a 32v Ford Modular engine.

Agreed! Also, it's a bit like Christmas every time boxes of parts show up in the mail.

Plus, while I don't know for sure, I'd bet there isn't nearly as awesome of a community around the Caymans as the 944s...

It certainly seems that way. Misery loves company?

I'm already doing the modding for the 987. I sort of finished what I wanted out of the 944, and placed a moratorium on new additions. As it is, I am going to lose at least $2000 for driving the car 6000 miles.
