Grab a vernier caliper and measure the cam lift on the unknown cam. Subtract the base diameter from the lobe height on both cams and you've got lift numbers you can compare. If it's a reground cam it'll have a smaller base circle. The appearance of the ramp profile isn't everything.

Interesting thoughts. I haven't heard of lash caps being used with these cars...
Speaking of cams & such, I am disappointed with BOTH cam housings I bought (part of the package) each one has 1 lifter bore with deep scratches on it. Does that mean they are garbage? Does it affect oil pressure? Should I throw these out?
Also disappointed with the shiny 2.5 block. Looks so clean & so nice. Even has it's own girdle & b.s. covers & oil pan. So nice until you see someone cross hatched the bores. So What is that good for? Bore out to 102mm or get some new cylinders installed (bigger or same as oem). That was a disappointment...

All the "primer grey" colour is gone & it looks like aluminum but under the cross hatch I see a feint line on the cyls where the carbon ridge was. What's this treatment you are talking about?

BIG ***** STYLE
Hustled last night and got up at 5am to drive out of town to another city for Autocross practise. Rain & rain & rain. I brought some rain wear but not enough for this. Drove back... I do enjoy driving this car in the rain.
I'M SORRY WILSON!!! You deserve a nice warm bath. I love you :-*

Have a head to match. And ecm/afm. Missing some small bits. Cams look GREAT at first glance. Piston disagreed with a couple of valves (and the big guy won).
Less damage (at first glance) than I suspected... but there have been several people handling this stuff resulting in small bits that have been lost.
Looking at the 944Online.com diagram... sheesh these engine look complicated. I was thinking about building it up (hot rodding it), but now I dunno if I want something this complicated under my hood.

Hmmmm....
Matti. You got my attention.
Lemme see, it's early but I'll do my best estimate:
Engine Rebuild gasket kit & buy missing bits & pieces: $1500 cdn/$1000 US
Turbo valve springs & 2 Jon Milledge cams $3000 CDN/$2000 US
Head Port & Polish & Rebuild $2000 CDN/$1300 US
Jon Milledge-STAHL Headers $1600 CDN/$1300US
Clutch $1000 CDN/$700 US
Misc $500
--------------
$6800 US Damn, I don't have that sort of money...
IMAGINE that engine with these modes & a stand alone tunable ecm & get rid of the AFM. It would be a rocket!

S injectors run at 3.8bar fuel pressure so I imagine there's something different to account for that.
Before blowing money on hot cams and such you should just put a maf on the 944s engine. That alone will put it over 200hp and make it much nicer to drive than stock.
Porting unnecessary unless your power goals are really high, but the stock oil system won't rev as high as the ports would really allow. They are huge already!!
BTW, if you are good with wiring, you should be able to run the 944s engine with the 8v computer... Which means it's easier to find a maf and tune it.
944s DME is very conservative and emissions oriented so there is a lot of power left on the table in the tune.
