Our local FB based 944 club has a member working for a VW dealership that just got a 1993 968 with129k on the clock. It needs a bit of work, of course, but overall is supposed to be on pretty good shape.

Here's what he says is wrong with it:
--non-LSD trans has issues, won't go into second gear, probably needs rebuild
--oil pan leaking

Other than that, it sounds good! Has a spec clutch and lightened flywheel, and a stack of maintenance records.

The dealer offered it to him for $4k - so my question, is that a good deal?? The KBB value was only $6k but I feel like that has to be off. I'm trying to convince my wife that I can but it, fix it, enjoy it for a bit and then move on with it and probably even MAKE a bit over what I put into it.

Sanity check from the RL crowd though - will I break even/profit or will I be losing money here??

If the car is straight, good interior, and those are the only issues with it...

For $4k, I'd buy it.

The trans rebuild could be an expensive proposition, though, so figure that into your purchase price (or swap to a 944 tube/trans, if you're in a pinch)

I sold mine a month ago or so for well above KBB, and I had several backup offers at full price, plus one at $1000 over. 79K miles, 1992, sold for $12,500. If you cna do the work, you can probably make some money. If you can't, then you won't.

Yeah definitely think I can do the work - I've done the oil pan on an 86 951 with one piece everything, so it can't be worse that that right??

I haven't done a trans before, any idea how bad it would be?

It's a no brainer. Even if you have to pay $2k for a trans rebuild, $1k for belts & foes and $1k for decent tires you are still in the money.

If you are lucky the trans might just need a fluid change, the records show belts done recently and the tires have life left. Sump gasket is easy if you've done it before, just make sure the leak isn't from the rms.

Don't have to!! Just got (surprisingly without much trouble) spousal concurrence!! I love my wife - she is by far the most reasonable and open minded individual I have ever met. The fact that those traits are allowing me to get this 968 are just a bonus

If you buy this car and get the trans rebuilt, add a limited-slip diff at that time. It's MUCH cheaper to do it with a 968's G50-based trans than a 944/951 unit. Hope you pick it up, 968s are a huge step up from any 944.

True...while the G44/00 was out for a rebuild, there would be no better time to install an LSD.
