I have not done a v8 swap, but I have done "one off" swaps before, and have learned a lot about what it takes to do a custom fabricated driveline so here goes my opinion. I think you should worry less about which motor you want in the car, and instead ask yourself what do you want out of the car? Do you want a racer or smooth highway cruiser, daily driver or drag car? Do you want the raw racecar feel or do you demand creature comforts. So far these questions do not care one bit about which motor to choose, as you can get these experiences from any engine. The reason I am talking about it from this point of view is if you want raw power racecar feel, an engine swap can be straight forward. If you want comfortable highway cruiser or daily driveability, this engine swap should take into account air conditioning, sound deadening, fuel consumption when cruising (no one cares about fuel mileage at WOT) If that is the direction, your engine swap will get much more expensive than "stuffing in" any ole v8 setup, with no power anything, no a/c, awful gas mileage, loud and smelly, hot, etc..

What do YOU want to use the car for?
How much can you do on your own?
How much $$$ do you want to spend.
If you have never done a swap before, whatever $$ you calculate you need, multiply it by 3. Anyone that says different is either dreaming of a perfect world, or has a nice shop, lots of equipment, tools, knowhow, and lots of time.

Goodluck in whatever you choose!

What's the service-ability like on the LSx swaps? Basic maintenance items still pretty easy to get to? I'm nowhere near doing one, yet. But, I would have to seriously consider it if I ran into engine trouble with my stocker.

putting a carb on an LS motor is like taking a dump on a wedding cake. its just not something a sensible person would do.

The LSx makes sense for many reasons. It's light, it's compact, it's reliable, it's modern.

A "350/383, LT1 with a carb" makes no sense at all. It's heavy, upsetting the reason these cars are so fun. It's taller, often requiring ugly hood mods. Carb? No way would i want to deal with ancient carbs agian, ever! (and i grew up building muscle cars)

If you're not doing an LSx with FI it would be much better to keep a turbo FI 4 cyl set up.

If you really like the steam punk look of carbs fit a Jenvey ITB set-up on your LSx.

Which trans/5th gear, and what highway speed? That's better than I average with the NA motor, but I go fast...

I'm not even running high boost yet and I'll smoke any of you fools!!!!

BRING IT!!....SOON.....PLEASE...I'll lay down money to boot!!! $2,000 if any of you boys can beat me at my local dragstrip... You pay a grand if (when) you lose...

There it is..._NONE_ of you has the ***** to bring it, and certainly won't take my $$$

300 hp LS1 up here = 220rwhp = 100mph if that.
425hp LS up here = 300rwhp up here = maybe 105-110 mph

Think before you speak so confidently....
