Glad you got this sorted you should be able to get stock to about -3.25" with the bottom spring mount cut. Just be careful of your a-arms, you want those parallel to the ground to avoid the ball joint breaking and bump steer causing an issue. You can keep the a-arms level at lower body settings with the geometry corrected ball joints.

Don't give up!! Lots of PB blaster, then lower the car onto a breaker bar using its weight to break it free

I'm happy as low as I am now haha. There's so many hills and stuff in my town that I couldn't survive with it that low!

are ball joints a concern on an early car? seems the vw guys have put early ball joints through their paces:

i do agree that there is such a thing as too low. i may be flirting with that line myself.

No.. My advice however it to take advantage of that and put in new control arms and ball joints while you are in there. I have seen control crack. They are only about $25 each arm plus $11 for each ball joint so very cost effect just to replace them. This way everything is fresh. Heck bushings can cost more than the arms.

As for ball joint life.. They seem to last even under racing conditions, but again at $11 each might as well replace them. I did replace one ball joint this January. It was it little loose and probably had 6-7 years of racing on it. The other side was fine.

Ah yes, its an early car my bad. The early ball joints can take a lot more punishment than the later ones. Still wise to keep those a-arms as level as possible. The VW guys have lots of options to correct bump steer, we unfortunately don't on the 944.

Keith, agreed it looks just about right at the height in your picture, you stuck at it, nice job.

^^^ At first I read that as "you suck at it"

And +1, thirdgenbird, control arms and ball joints are cheap and easy to replace...

I know they are cheap and easy to replace. (I wash more parts were) I just wanted to confirm they were not an issue on early cars. I figured he forgot you had steel arms. It is the best of both worlds, cheap and reliable.

You are runing a little rear end high. May be 1/4 to 1/2" that will create some oversteer.
